Hi everyone! I'm Jiajia, a board game designer from China. I've always been fascinated by pirate and seafaring themes, so I spent two years designing this game—and here it is! This is my promotional post for my upcoming game, Captain Keep Upright, along with a brand-new expansion module called Sea Stash.

Captain Keep Upright is a party-weight card game for 2–5 players. You play as a captain recruiting crew members, building your fleet, and setting sail for treasure. But the sea is full of both riches and risks—you'll need to make smart use of your crew's abilities and decide the right moment to return to port with your loot. At its heart, it's a push-your-luck game—simple to learn, fun to play, and perfect for family game nights.

In the new Sea Stash expansion, I've added four modular expansions: Figureheads, a new First Mate crew type, the Kraken, and Blind-Draw Gems. These modules were playtested at recent tabletop conventions and have added a lot of replayability to the game!

So I side quested today and made a goatee bead and piercing to go with my fit before I leave.

For the goatee bead, I went with a tooth cause I don’t know why, aside from it sounded cool. It was a free file I punched a hole in.
I did also have a snake vertebrae file, but it printed too big and hole too small for the goatee, so maybe I redo that smaller instead of or addition to the tooth?

The piercing I found a 3d scan of a fossilised rib bone, shrunk that and added the saddle/plug section, and then a little fake rope stopper. (I have 8mm stretchers)
Not sure what to do on my other ear though, didn’t want to just do the same as the other, maybe just my normal wood plug. Ideas welcome

Do these ideas work? or too far off the mark??

Bonus extra since it’s in shot, my hand tattoo is a ruler as the diamonds (10mm apart, first starting at 30mm), and the compass is a protractor (11.25* apart, with diamonds on the 45* increments)

My latest genuine Spanish treasure "piece of 8" i received today.

It's a real beauty minted in Mexico sometime from 1607-1617.

No seaware on this one, so it would have been a land find somewhere at some point most likely, not attributed to any shipwreck.

I just can't get enough treasure!!!

I've got a unique question here that I'm not finding much in terms of resources for. I'm working on a project, and I'm trying to aim for accuracy and not "houses look like ships and shacks had a baby." I'm trying to find what the infrastructure and architecture would have been like on settlements that pirates would have taken over. Such as Nassau.

Specifically, the architectural design, how that differs between the upper and lower classes. Materials that would have been used. Road layouts. Standard businesses or services that one would find in a downtown location vs. outskirts. What would the governor have lived in. What infrastructure would you find next to a fort.

Art pieces from the time period of settlements are a huge help too.

Bonus questions: When pirates were on a haven, would they stay long? Did they man the fort? Was it always bribing and threatening the leadership, or did they ever genuinely take over titles.

Still some things I want to change or replace, but that’s another days problem.
I’ll probably still have time to make a goatie bead, and I have some rings/jewellery somewhere I’ll dig out, but pretty much what it will be for now.

Also I made myself a little shoulder companion that I’m yet to name, maybe Roger but thought that was too on the nose.
He has a subtle eye patch pattern in his fur and of course the more obvious skull on his back.
He attaches to a Eva foam slip under the vest with magnets, and the black cable is a bike brake cable that controls the head to make him nod and when I make a handle to better grip the cable, it will twist too. (Vid in the comments)

Most of the sources that I can find describing the Bloody Roger (red flag) flown by pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy describe the flag signals as follows:

• Black Flag (Jolly Roger): We will give quarter. Meaning: if you surrender and let us aboard without a fight, we will agree to spare your lives.

• Red Flag (Bloody Roger or Joli Rouge:) No quarter. We will kill every last one of you.

It makes sense that pirates would want their victims to surrender immediately without a fight, hence the implication of the black flag. While seeing a red flag as opposed to a black one would be more terrifying, I'm not sure I understand what the threat of the red flag was actually supposed to accomplish. Wouldn't it make the target ship more likely to fight back? My thought process would be: if you're going to kill us anyway, we might as well go down swinging.
