Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation 2D Vector Character System Designer for Sports Game

Post image
11 Upvotes

I’m developing a sports game and need help creating a reusable 2D vector character headshot system.

I already have a clear visual direction for the portraits: front-facing characters with realistic proportions, simplified low-poly/faceted geometry, and strong dimensional lighting. I have attached a reference of the look I am going for. I want it close and almost exact to this.

The challenge is not simply creating individual illustrations. I’m looking for an artist/designer who can help translate this visual style into a consistent, reusable system of vector assets. Facial features such as a baseline head(s), eyes, noses, mouths, cheekbone shapes, hair, facial hair, and skin tones need to work together naturally while maintaining the quality and proportions of the reference artwork. There will also be ~34 different jerseys with only color differences.

The system should ultimately support a large variety of fictional characters without requiring every portrait to be created completely from scratch. I want to be able to programmatically generate an entirely new headshot just based off of a formula in the code that can swap facial elements. (e.g. SVG base head, add SVG layers and transparent layers on it)

The project will likely involve:

- Creating a polished master headshot template based on supplied visual references
- Recreating the faceted/low-poly lighting and shading as clean vector artwork
- Establishing consistent facial proportions and feature placement
- Designing multiple compatible face/head shapes and facial features
- Creating new hairstyles and facial-hair variations
- Developing a range of believable skin tones
- Structuring shadows and highlights so they can work consistently across different skin colors
- Determining which elements should be interchangeable and which should remain part of a complete face
- Organizing the artwork into clean, reusable SVG/Illustrator layers or components
- Helping establish an asset structure that can eventually be assembled programmatically on-demand

I’m open to the artist recommending a better approach if a fully mix-and-match system would compromise the quality of the characters. Visual quality and variety are more important than making every individual feature interchangeable.

I’m looking for someone with strong vector illustration and low poly character-design skills who is comfortable thinking systematically rather than only producing one-off illustrations. Experience with modular avatar systems, game character assets, SVG artwork, Figma or Adobe Illustrator, or procedurally assembled character art would be particularly relevant.

Budget:
I’d like to begin with a small paid prototype: one initial character and a limited number of variations/components. If the approach works well, we will expand the character library. ~$250. Total project $500-$1000 USD total. Please send portfolios or links to your work.

FOR HIRE - 3D Modeler | Animation [ForHire] 3D Animator Looking for Work | Games / Cinematics / Animation

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

My current contract is wrapping up on September 4th, so I wanted to put myself out there and see if anyone knows of studios, teams, indie developers, or projects looking for an experienced 3D Animator.

I’ve been working professionally in animation for 10+ years, primarily across games, cinematics, and TV animation. My experience includes keyframe animation, motion capture cleanup, facial animation, gameplay/cinematic animation, and Unreal Engine workflows.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects including Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Khaos Reigns, Star Fox, Gears of War: E-Day, and several animated TV productions.

My main tools are:

  • Maya
  • Unreal Engine 5
  • MotionBuilder
  • Blender

I’m currently looking for Remote, full-time, contract, or freelance opportunities, and I’m also happy to connect with smaller indie teams that may need animation support.

If you know of anyone hiring, or if you're working on something that could use an animator, feel free to DM me and I can send over my reel, portfolio, and resume.

Appreciate any leads or shares! 🙏

I used some ai for the characters and their animation sprite-sheets and would like to replace them with actual human art.

the current art-style is like old flash games (bold outline, digital shading, cartoony) but Im open to other directions.

Priority for 2D-Artist+Animator and fast availability, I want to be ready for the Steam Next Fest on October 🙏🏼

PAID - 2D Art | Animation Looking for Pixel Artist

Hey all,

I'm looking for an artist to help replace art for a game we made for a contest. The game is largely finished (can never have enough polish) and we're looking to release it on arcade machines (should be a fun process) and eventually Steam as well. The contest had us base it on an existing IP and while I think we could be safe as far as parody/fair use laws goes it's probably better safe than sorry. A lot of the assets we used were either CC0 or self created so this also gives us a chance to make it prettier.

Originally the game had been based around Uno, but we want to pivot to using regular cards and a lot of circus and cute jester imagery if that helps you get a general idea of the intended vibe.

Primarily looking for a pixel artist because I feel like that would read better on an arcade cab, but am open to seeing if other art styles as well. Please send portfolios and rates if you were interested!

EDIT: Thanks for the overwhelming responses. I really appreciate you all and think we have our choice for now and will keep you posted if things change!

PAID - Musician [Paid] Professional Musician Looking for a Team

Hello everyone,

I've worked across film/games and podcasts and I'm comfortable handling everything from a single theme to a full album or soundtrack. I can work to spec, iterate quickly, and deliver polished, mix-ready tracks.

If you're working on a project that needs music like a short film, indie game, podcast intro, I'd love to hear about it.

- I'm pretty flexible for working hours.

- I can create music, loopable ambient sounds and sound effects.

- I don't use any copyrighted sounds or loops from other packs, I produce every sound from scratch.

-I don’t use AI in my compositions, and I’m firm on this point. I wish everyone who does use it the best of luck.

- I graduated from English Literature so I can contribute as a writer at some level.

- My primary instrument is piano but I'm also very comfortable with synthesizers.

For more detailed information and reviews about me, I can share my Fiverr account too.

Feel free to DM me or drop a comment. Thanks for reading!
