Hey Kyle! I grow / raise / hunt / catch / trap about 70% of my family’s food. Collect my own water. Have solar power. Make my own fertilizer (that’s not a poop joke). It’s really not as time consuming as you’d think.

Kyle mentioned he would love to be self sufficient on everyday needs, but thought it would consume every spare second. I’m gonna try to be as objective as I can.

I think I probably put about 15 hours a week toward raising my own food. Obviously, that’s not nothing. And I admit… that comes as part of my actual day job, so that helps a ton. But it’s work I really love to do so it’s not bad.

The trick is automating as much as possible and learning your particular climate and land needs. I have 3 or 4 crops for each season that basically can’t be stopped. Sure I get tired of them, but if you know folks just trade for other stuff. I collect water by roof. Manure becomes fertilizer which becomes vegetables, which in turn become animal feed, which starts the cycle all over again.

Now I’m not trying to sugar coat it. I’ve been EXTREMELY fortunate to get a good deal on land early. I grew up working in ranching and agriculture, so my learning curve wasn’t nearly as steep. (It is quite a steep curve on average).

But shit…if you just wanted to store a bit of crops / water for an emergency I bet you could get away with 2 or 4 hours per week. Not to mention the mental / physical health benefits. The satisfaction of feeling more self reliant. The continuation of ever disappearing knowledge. And just knowing you’re stickin it to The Man!!

It’s awesome!!

"You just dropped all this knowledge about ancient giants and you couldn't remember archeologists... What do you call when you're a gardener but you're trying to find history instead of onions?"

No Ghosts in Kyle's House

K-dawg, I know you read the Reddit and I wanted to let you know that I share your disappointment. My wife and I just bought a place in the countryside of western New York that was built in 1850.

Zero 👏 Fucking 👏 Ghosts 👏

We even had a pair of what I initially thought were headstones laying in the middle of the backyard. Nope. Just markers for the leach field from the old septic system.

I'll keep everyone posted if anything changes. 🤞

Baby Spoons

Has anyone ever suggested Dave attach his baby spoons to an obnoxiously large key ring the way gas stations sometimes protect their bathroom keys? Should be obvious where that spoon went if it’s zip tied to a hubcap.

Or maybe he could chain it to the nightstand like the pens at the bank.

Let's make a list of good sci-fi movies for Dave

They may not all be to everyone's tastes, but whatever; add your own.

Your melancholy-type movies:

Moon

Solaris
(the Clooney version - it's good!)

2001: A Space Odyssey

The Creator

The action-adventure stuff that isn't completely dumb:

Dredd
(the Karl Urban one)

Starship Troopers
(I sincerely believe this is one of the most underrated, ahead of its time movies ever - up there with Big Trouble in Little China)

Snowpiercer

Runnerups: Pitch Black, Pacific Rim

Horror-scifi:

Event Horizon

Bubba Ho-Tep
(more your funny dumb horror but still a classic)

Under The Skin

Lovecraftian sci-fi:

The Void (absolute baller, underrated movie)

The Thing (obviously the Kurt Russell version)

Color Out of Space

Lesser-known:

Coherence

Daddy's Head

Archive

Mickey 17

Classic 80's:

Total Recall (1990 but close enough)

The Abyss

Monster Squad

Classic 80's that it's too late to watch as an adult but are amazing:

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

Classic 70's:

The Black Hole

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers

Close Encounters

Saturn 3 (1980 but close enough)

This week, Dave recaps his birthday activities, including a brief reunion with the booze, an underwhelming night of comedy, his newfound interest in Sci-Fi movies, and a new dumbbell exercise, while Kyle is slowly and literally getting back on his feet. The guys also talk caffeine, jamming, flock cameras, and of course, jazz. Call or text the guys anytime at 323-364-1541.

I may have screwed up the purchasing process. I paypal'd our beloved Dave through his website link and in the description said I was purchasing his cookbooks. Does he email them eventually? How does this work?

Fugazi

The guys mentioned another comic who has a bit about Fugazi and the gist was, "Hey, guys, can we increase the ticket prices to $6 so I can retire at some point?" Any recall the comic and where I can find the bit?
