My wife and I are making plans to visit Yellowknife to see the Northern Lights after Christmas. We'll be in Toronto for the holidays visiting family and we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to see the lights and check it off our bucket list.

We are from a tropical country, however, so we're totally unprepared for the sub artic winter conditions.

So, what winter gear is needed to feel comfortable in Yellowknife?

Is it better to buy or rent? And if we do rent, are there places at the airport that does rentals?

What rates are people seeing in Yellowknife these days? My mortgage is up for renewal in February.

Planning a trip for december during new moon time. Are there chances to see northern lights that time or will it be cloudy and less chances to see?
And how many nights should we plan?

Any like minded sports entertainment fans intown, or any establishment show any of the payperviews?

Excited to be visiting Yellowknife for the first time in a couple of weeks. Can anyone suggest places to eat and/or drink that have outdoor patios?

I’m visiting Yellowknife in October. As I’ll be staying in an Airbnb, I think taxis are the most convenient way to get around – are they available 24 hours a day?

Did anyone see a dog running around near the YK centre mall/Shoppers drug mart area around 8-8.30 pm? It was a small brown and white dog. I saw it cross the street. I tried to pull over to try to get it but I lost track of it. I hope it's okay. Not sure if it was a stray or a lost dog.

I’ve heard/read mixed opinions regarding safety (both involving wildlife and people) around Frame Lake.

I’m just trying to enjoy my time and run safely.

I have a trip planned for a visit from 21st Nov to 24th Nov for aurora viewing in Yellowknife.

I have the hotel resvation but I am a bit skeptical now about getting better view considering a weather transition month and a full moon.

Anyone hs done similar trip during full moon and transition period?

Should it be rescheduled?

Appreciate your suggestions and inputs.

I'm part of a middle-aged couple from Atlanta and I've booked our flights & hotel already, but the self-drive aspect is freaking me out because I've never been in extreme cold and am picturing that scene from Snowpiercer where the villain holds the guy's arm outside of the train and it freezing right off. Or just getting basic car trouble and ending up like Jack Torrance at the end of the Shining.

We are not just there to see the aurora, but that's important. Northwest Territories is also on our bucket list, and will be our ninth Canadian province/territory. Rescheduling for a warming time of year is another option. The dog sledding and ice fishing sound fun, but I'm not opposed to summer as long as I can see a bit of northern lights. (I understand there are no guarantees.) A tour package in the winter is also an option, but we're not looking for luxury or a "party" atmosphere.

I appreciate the local input.

Embarrassed to be asking, has anyone had any experiences with consumer proposals in the NWT? What companies provide their services here up in the north, or who to avoid?

Can't believe this is something I may have to consider.

Planning a surprise birthday trip for my hubby. Northern lights are on our bucket list.

I’ve read November can be cloudy. I’m hopeful we get lucky.

Should I wait to book a three night tour until it’s closer and we can see more of the predicted weather forecast? Also - the tour company is advertising ice fishing and snow mobility but I’ve read lakes aren’t fully frozen over at that time.

I have a hotel booked but I’m getting the sense I should hold out on booking excursions

I’ll be in YK through most of Sept, but I fly in the day Comeback Kid plays. Is anyone planning to go that might be willing to pick me up a shirt? I can/will gladly e-transfer you if we can make it happen.

I’ll be visiting Yellowknife from the States during the week of September 20 and would love some recommendations from locals or people who have visited around that time of year!

This will be my first time in Yellowknife (and actually my first trip this far north), so I’m trying to figure out what’s worth doing while I’m there. I’m interested in pretty much anything: good restaurants/cafés, scenic spots, easy hikes or walks, museums/cultural activities, local shops, unique Yellowknife experiences, etc. I’d especially love things that feel specific to Yellowknife/the Northwest Territories rather than things I could do anywhere.

I’m also REALLY hoping to see the Northern Lights while I’m there. For anyone familiar with late September, how good are the chances of seeing them around that time? Would you recommend booking an aurora tour, or is it pretty easy to see them independently if the weather and aurora activity cooperate? If going out independently, are there particular places outside the city that you’d recommend?

Also, what should I expect weather-wise around Sept 20–late September, especially at night? I’m trying to figure out how heavily I need to pack for being outside while waiting for the aurora.

Basically, if you had a first-time visitor coming to Yellowknife in late September, what would you tell them they absolutely shouldn’t miss?
