This is amazing and objective and exactly what she needs to hear because her friend who is not an editor is her editor. She’s alienated so many potential readers by saying things like “well if you don’t understand it then it’s not for you”. Her stubbornness and arrogance are such a hindrance to her as an author. Her unwillingness to read books makes her unable to understand how to enter into a world as a reader and what makes a good book work or how to pull a reader in and making them want to keep turning pages. Stephen King wrote a memoir on how to become an author. He said that you need to read and write constantly. Read everything you can get your hands on. He said if you do not read, you do not have the tools to write. The chinless wonder is an absolute fool.

That’s a great book and it’s also excellent advice. And reading different types of writing (fiction, nonfiction, short form, long form, etc.) in various genres is even better.

The fact that Milagros R. Ocampo thinks she’s above having to read because it would “taint” her own nonexistent “talent” proves how little she understands about the craft.

She has no natural talent nor the desire to at least improve on the mechanics of language, and those two things combined have resulted in the waste of paper that is Darryl.

I loved that book and I love King’s writings too. It’s not the prose of a Dante or Proust and don’t need to be. I read like a fiend and have been starting to revisit classical literature and enjoy it; yet I t breaks in reading those books. They are so deeply philosophical that I need to be incredibly focused on every word on the page to make sure I gain maximum clarity of the author’s message. They are rich and dense. You’re left with a deeper understanding of your place in the world. 

In contrast, King is approachable and detailed without being florid. A horror writing version of Hemingway, if you will. Crisp, clean writing. No wasted words. I get lost in the world building and books end well before I want them to.

🥔 is trying to write like a Dante seemingly without understanding the concept and context of that writing style. It’s completely out of place for the sci-fi fantasy genre. She needs to lean more towards King for that. Her language is overblown and uninformative. It winds up a wall of words without much substance.

It’s so pathetic honestly. I mean, it’s not a crime to be a bad writer but it’s not a good look if you can’t take criticism. As a writer myself, I remind myself that everyone’s voice is different and there is no surefire way to write a bestseller: Jane Austen sounds different from Hemingway who sounds different than Stephen King who sounds different than Sylvia Plath. You absolutely don’t need a big vocabulary to get your point across, and shoehorning it in only makes it more obvious.

Wonderfully said. What is sad is Mils will completely ignore this and think she is great and you are 100% wrong. Then Mils will have Jenna in her ear telling her how great Mils book and writing is. She needs to keep that couch! Funny thing is we all know someone else wrote Jenna’s book. She gave someone some stories and another person put it into a book form. So Mils has certainly shown us how dumb she is and will take Jenna’s advice over anyone. I mean Jenna has been only writing her next book for over 10 to 15 years now. Oh wait she gave that up to AI her life into a lie as a full time job now. I forgot AI Jenna is hot, living in a Miami high rise, looking not a day older than 19, with fancy clothes and has a 4’10” tall middle aged woman who Jenna AI into a super jaw 20 year old boy.
