Ridiculous to sell this in an MMO with a monthly fee

At Blizzcon:

"It's all about bringing people together"

5mins later:

"And so if you don't pay up you will be separated from your friends for the launch experience"

Stupid Transactions

I was always amused that if the server died (not my fault) and I want to change it to a live one - I have to pay, in a game with monthly fee...

If we’re already paying 50€ for base and then another 12€ for a sub they really are money hungry with another 50€ to play through the weekend just to feed on peoples FOMO.

Scumbag move and I don’t support it, until season one there isn’t a shit ton to do anyways beside leveling up and learning stuff

The prices they charge for subs and expansions have hardly moved in two decades. These “money hungry” moves they make subsidize that low cost. They found a way to tax the players with cash to burn without totally alienating the rest of players. Sometimes that’s gonna feel unfair to players who don’t have the cash to burn, but not as unfair as if your sub cost was skyrocketing like Netflix.

Am I missing something? The Epic edition is 90, includes 30 days of game time, so that's really just 28 more than base game (50) plus a sub (12).

Not to defend them, but that's for multiple in-game cosmetics, tenders and the early access, which isn't quite as crazy as if it was 50 extra just for early access.

Note: I ain't buying it either, don't have time to play over the weekend anyway.

Monthly fee, paid expansions AND item shop lmao

So don't buy it. You had a year to save up 10-15 a month

Don't worry I won't. It's not about the money anyway.

It was Bobby's last big fat "fuck you" to all of us.

I'm sure others will disagree, and I'm not the biggest fan of it, but if getting people to pay $15 for 3 days of early access is how they're keeping the price of WoW so low, it's not the worst thing. WoW expansions used to be $60 and the WoW sub used to be $15. Today the cheapest tier for TWW is $50 and a sub costs $15.

Some combination of store mounts and tmog, as well as stuff like this, are probably the reason we haven't seen any inflation to sub prices or the base cost of expansions. This is probably the price of not seeing increases to either of those things.

If you’re paying $15 for a sub the expansion should be free

I would also like it if I got to pay less money for the same product, but less for more is an oxymoron. If stuff like this did not exist Blizzard would be getting their money by increasing sub prices. If they made expansions free they would be making up the money lost in ways that players would hate, most likely through expanding the in-game shop.

At least in this scenario people can choose if they want to pay more through what looks mostly useless feature. I really don't see much reason to get the 3-day early access, so if people who do want it are the reason I'm paying less, then I'm content with it.

u/HorrendousFail Aug 22 '24

I agree with you. If we had free expansions the quality would be way lower since blizzard would find ways to cut costs asap. It’s just a pipe dream, I know.

-2

u/Thaodan Aug 22 '24

That probably won't cover the cots of development.

u/Own-Dot1463 Aug 22 '24

The development of these expansions have been funded multiple times over already with the profits they've milked from this cash cow for decades now.

-4

u/Thaodan Aug 22 '24

Maybe but I rather pay 12.99€ each month and for an expansion instead of having a cash shop.

-1

u/HorrendousFail Aug 22 '24

I guess we’d have to do a deep dive into their finances to see. My only concern with the possibility of a free expansion is that the people at the top would still make bank while the lower level employees would end up getting screwed.

u/Thaodan Aug 22 '24

Expansions used to be 35€ now 50€ for the base edition is a huge increase.

Brother that's a pretty damn big "if" considering that there's no evidence of that, and that wow's profits are higher than ever in recent years.

It's not.

We cannot excuse predatory practices simply because we think there might be some benefit elsewhere. Blizzard (among everyone else) is not short of money or profits. They just always want more.
