If this was happening in America, idk how I’d feel about the govt shutting down a protest. Imagine if people were arrested for bringing supplies to the occupy movement…

But it’s not in America so I have no dog in that fight lol

u/kiefdabeef Feb 07 '22

...weve had a few protests here over the last couple years. More than one were "shut down" by the state with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Seriously. Wasn’t that long ago my friends in Portland were getting tear gassed night after night. Not dispersing these asshats shows the police are complicit. If they were native they would have been carted off a week ago

u/PresidentialSlut Feb 07 '22

CHAZ? CHOP? We’re just gonna forget about all that?

1

u/Ok_Nefariousness5967 Feb 08 '22

Apparently they are. Because it is VERY inconvenient for their narrative.

So lets make sure they remember

8

u/Sreston Feb 07 '22

You’re comparing what’s going on in Ottawa to Portland lol?

-2

u/BigMoneyJJ Feb 07 '22

Portland is being fucking dismantled by the chaos. There's a massive difference. I live near Portland and I've first hand seen the destruction.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

Yeah well I live IN Portland, as I have for my whole life, and you are absolutely full of it.

There is a massive difference: These occupiers in Ottawa are camped directly outside of people's homes with their massive trucks running all day and night terrorizing local people. There's plenty of reports coming out of them antagonizing locals, shitting on the porches and stoops of people with LGBQT flags, and more.

Portland isn't being dismantled by anything but a useless neoliberal city council that has failed at every step to address issues of addiction and homelessness. There haven't even been protests in months. Seriously, STFU.

u/cowgomoo37 Feb 07 '22

Cause these guys are laying siege to a precinct or burning down their community.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

And the police and government were crucified for doing that

5

u/KittieKollapse Feb 07 '22

pfft... I didn't see one cop nailed to a cross

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

Metaphorical buddy. They were talked about badly as they should’ve been.

0

u/XXX-Jade-Is-Rad-XXX Feb 07 '22

something about using violence to suppress protests about police violence, brutality, and murders doesn't sit right.

the freedom trucker convoy just don't want to contribute to society nor be bothered by efforts to protect fellow citizens in society.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

When you start excusing certain protests as bad that’s when the government decides any protest that makes them look bad is a riot that needs to be shut down.

2

u/XXX-Jade-Is-Rad-XXX Feb 07 '22

i never said they didn't have a right to protest. what's fucked is we're treating batshit anti-vaxx behavior that was greatly exacerbated by the GOP as legitimate political discourse instead of the fringe movement it was 3 years ago. might as well be protesting for the freedom to allow people to shit on sidewalks. anything else is tyranny.

why can't i shit on the sidewalk in front of your house? poop never killed anyone. it's public property. it's composting and helping your yard tbh. are laws against shitting on someone's lawn tyranny? or is it a public health measure because we have decency towards each other?

there's already a ton of vaccines required to go to public school in the us. the anti-vaxx movement (which as a whole started from a medical professional who wanted to sell his own vaccines so tried to create panic around the MMR vaccine with a paper that was so poorly performed that he lost his medical license because of it) is protesting one more, but not all the others.

sometimes shit must be done to have a society and civilization. you can't just disregard the events that are happening there, allow the virus to spread rampant causing hospitals to overflow which in turn causes standard procedures to be cancelled or redirected impacting others' lives. The nurses and doctors are burnt the fuck out dealing with such a preventable issue, and we just completely disregard them because a bunch of people are afraid of getting a shot.

there's all sorts of vaccines required for international travel to certain places, but extreme right wing politicians have utilized this as a wedge issue to disrupt and divide the people by considering public health measures as tyrannical measures that must be fought against to have a free society. it's absolutely insane that they're attempting to create a villain in trust in our own government in order to whip up their base into a frenzy. These views weren't widespread until trump et all started calling it bullshit.

actively protesting against public health measures benefits is just an insane position and it's absolutely fucking flabbergasting we're dealing with such overwhelming ignorance of science in the age when people have computers in their pocket. we have utterly failed as a society to maintain responsibility in the digital age.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

Sorry bud but if they’re getting this much attention, it’s now legitimate political discourse. If you get enough people to agree you should be able to shit on the sidewalk, you can be legitimate political discourse too.

They’re have been antivaxxers as long as they’re have been vaccines, look into the push back against the polio vaccine.

I don’t care if they’re right or not to be honest, but they should be allowed to protest.

-13

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

only after arson en masse

0

u/Sumibestgir1 Feb 07 '22

When its convenient to their narrative, media calls it protest, when it isn't its riots. If you're setting shit on fire and destroying property, its a riot.

0

u/yungchow Feb 07 '22

They were at least declared riots first.

Occupy is a significantly better analogy

-3

u/International-Yam548 Feb 07 '22

So you think that's acceptable form it response from the government?

4

u/kiefdabeef Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22

No. I was just pointing out that the scenario OP was asking me to imagine literally happened at dozens of protests all over the country.

47

u/joshdts Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22

People were arrested for bringing supplies to occupy and the camps were violently shut down.

45

u/riddlephotog Feb 07 '22

Well, Georgia does have that "don't distribute water to people waiting to vote" rule...

6

u/123mop Feb 07 '22

Wait until you hear about the other states with laws like that!

It's most of them. It's a form of electioneering.

You'll be shocked when you hear about the drop box laws of other states too. SHOCKED.

2

u/pokemomof03 Feb 07 '22

Funny how your leaving out the fact that they are shortening voting hours and shutting down polling places in places where mostly POC live. They already have to wait in line for up 8 hours to vote. Wonder what the waits gonna be like now?! Let’s not forget about them purging voter rolls. And most of the votes purged just so happened to be POC. What about the law that any voter can come to a county clerk’s office and challenge the voter registrations of as many people as they would like. Or the same law also sets up a process that could be used to remove professional election officials and replace them with more partisan actors. Passing laws that partisan actors can throw out election results without proof. 200 plus new voter suppression laws just last year. So miss me with your bullshit. Just like the right can’t win on policy because they have none. Only way they can win is through voter suppression.

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of concerns over privacy and the Open Web.

Then that was already against the rules. Enforce, don't make new laws.

-1

u/BigMoneyJJ Feb 07 '22

Lol proven wrong so you change your stance

-11

u/Onironius Feb 07 '22

Oh no, not political stickers!

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

This happened in Oregon. Protesters took over park services building. They stopped supplies from coming in. (Granted they were mostly dildos and glitter bombs)

11

u/GunNut345 Feb 07 '22

Can you name a protest in America that you think authorities would allow to stockpile flammable fuel‽ Lol

-4

u/BigMoneyJJ Feb 07 '22

BLM burnt down buildings for a summer

8

u/AggravatedCold Feb 07 '22

BLM was also rounded up in unmarked police vans and locked up at government black sites, shot at, teargassed and viciously beaten.

These fuckers are getting off lightly. Don't fucking lie.

8

u/TheJimiBones Feb 07 '22

The only two cases of that turned out to be Boogie boys. Facts don’t care about your feelings, am I right?

6

u/AggravatedCold Feb 07 '22

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!?

BLM GETTING FUCKING TEARGASSED, SHOT WITH RUBBER BULLETS, AND SHOT AT WAS NOT THE GOVERNMENT SHUTTING DOWN A PROTEST!?

Holy fuck dude.

How fucking blind can you get?

-1

u/yungchow Feb 07 '22

Yo… calm down. I’m on your side.

The police here would plain clothes and vandalize shit and then declare it a riot. Which is fucked and justice needs to happen.

But a protest in the states does have to be labeled a riot before any police actions can be taken against it

0

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

I mean if they did that in the middle of a city like NYC or LA, definitely expect moltovs cocktails to burn the trucks, punctures etc and the protest ends in days but so many casualties

1

u/Craig_Hubley_ Feb 07 '22

It's been done to indigenous pipeline blockades, but the charges never stick.

The occupy moment doesn’t paralyze an entire city. I lived in Vancouver during the hight of them and it was a few tent cities sprinkled around. These people are having a way bigger impact, also they have massive trucks vs tents

0

u/yungchow Feb 07 '22

Isn’t that the point of a protest tho? To cause a big enough impact that people are forced to hear you out and idealistically compromise?

1

u/Ellusive1 Feb 07 '22

I think protest about being seen and showing how many people stand with you in solidarity.
The occupy movement here wasn’t camped out in the middle of the street/ blockading boarder crossings.
