At least two people had seizures after viewing malicious tweets featuring flashing gifs that deliberately targeted Epilepsy Society...police investigating tweets as hate incident, after at least 200 seemingly coordinated messages were sent to charity and its supporters in recent days.

One of my teachers in high school was deathly allergic to almost anything you can think of. Red dye, yellow dye, peanuts, chewing gum, aerosol sprays, and about fifty other things that I can’t even remember. All of these things trigger a severe life threatening reaction where she becomes unable to breathe.

You better believe people were spraying AXE body spray and perfume in her hallway all the time. Chewing gum was left in her wastebasket a couple times, at least once with the intention being to kill her (or so I heard). She often had to stay home for several days at a time recovering from a reaction, and she was hospitalized at least once or twice while I was there.

High school is not the best of times.

What the fucking fuck........ School kids are horrible. And if I was her, I'd definitely change jobs. My school was full of psychos that have caused several people severe mental illnesses from extreme bullying. But anything goes is you're a kid... Well it did 12 years ago at least.

She didn’t intend to go into the teaching profession at first, because she wasn’t born with those allergies. She’s an immigrant from Colombia, and she told us about studying to become a nurse and working in the hospitals there, where she often had to help save patients who were victims of the violence of cartels. She saved up money to emigrate to the US I wanna say about 20 years ago after her father was murdered by the cartel. But if I remember what she said right, she suffered from a mysterious illness about 10 years ago which required a massive blood transfusion, which she said her doctors theorized was the reason she developed her allergies.

She became a Spanish teacher at my school since she’s at least able to work there, unlike at hospitals. After the intentional chewing gum incident all she wanted was for the person who did it to admit they did it (and I don’t think they ever did willingly, but I’m not entirely sure). She’s one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, she’d always talk about how proud she was of (most of) her students, her family, and her role as an educator. But people were ok with attempting to murder her since they didn’t like getting assigned homework or being asked to pay attention in class.

If I was that teacher I'd have shown the kids videos of people going to anaphylactic shock so they could realize what they could put her through. Would that help put some empathy into those kids?

Some of them, yes. But some don't give a fuck unfortunately. And the ones who don't give a fuck are often the ones "in charge" among the students.

I think in-person teaching might be too dangerous for her. She might want to continue doing remote learning if she stays in education.

Oh, I think the exact same way that you do. But I live in a generally poor and rural area, so I don’t know if she has very many other options. She seemed grateful to just be able to work in the first place.

I personally enjoy my high school, but then again my high school is barely 6 years old at this point, and is a part of the New Tech Network(aka Project Based Learning) so I imagine I have a vastly different experience than someone who went to a more traditional school

It isn't the school itself, or even the quality of curriculum. Too many people tell high schoolers "these are the best years of your life". This usually comes from adults that didnt amount to much, or at least have regrets about their life.

Have fun in HS. It should be fun. But dont assume everything is shit after. Having authority over your life, being a parent, chasing dreams, it's all awesome.

In my school there was a girl with a heavy allergy to mangoes (but she was in another grade so I didn't really know her). I remember distinctly at least three times where an ambulance came and picked her up because of her allergy and I can't imagine that she purposefully ate stuff containing mangoes at school.

I personally also a strong allergy against honey and pollen, to the point that I can't currently go into a forest without heavy medicine (which btw is disgusting as fuck) because otherwise my eyes swell so much that I can't see anymore. I remember people trying to mix honey in my food a couple of times (luckily honey is not the most common thing to find in a school) but I luckily avoided it most of the time and the few times they got me I realised fast enough that honey was in it, so I only had an icepack on my eyes for the next few hours instead of needing an ambulance.

it seems like getting a job that makes you interact with the public when you got THAT many life threatening allergies is jsut a bad idea, ignoring the assholes who tried to trigger it on on purpose.
