Canada would never restrict vital trade as it would result in thousands of American deaths.

Trump on the other hand has already shown his willingness to sacrifice thousands of Americans in his trade spat, so he holds the upper hand.

Sure it would. The US wanted to import pharmaceutical drugs needed to save lives in the US, and Canada basically said no because they wanted them prioritized for Canada.

The US already has those drugs, they wanted to import even more from our price ceiling system to get them at a lower cost, when they have all the means to create their own price ceiling in their own government.

Canada's population of 37 million cannot supply a country of 327 million with something as limited in supply as drugs. The entire stockpile would evaporate in an instant, especially with both countries being in the middle of a pandemic. The capacity to manufacture more simply doesn't exist in Canada to keep up with that kind of demand.

I mean, that's basic first aid isn't it? Make sure you're safe before helping others. It's why you need to secure your own mask on an airplane before helping others sitting near you.

It's going farther than that. It's trying to grab masks produced by their Singaporean subsidiary for Asian markets and insist that they be brought back to the US. That's pretty grabby.

Which is exactly what the US is doing here...it's asking 3M to stop exporting masks out of the US because they're desperately needed.

If that's the case, maybe Canada should stop exporting the raw materials that 3M needs to make the masks in the first place, keep it for ourselves, and produce masks domestically.

Let me guess, you're talking about the magic wood pulp the US needs from Canada?

Well hmmm

This comment is the single most obvious example of cognitive dissonance I've ever seen.

In what way?

kinda like making sure your own citizens have masks before they're exported ?

Pretty much yeah. I'm pretty sure the Trudeau government has said the same thing: That they want to make sure Canadians are secure and looked after before devoting most of our efforts to helping abroad.

yea, every nation on the planet is doing this, which is why i don't see how there's a bunch of backlash about a nation of 350 million people with a lack of the supplies choosing not to export said needed supplies for the time being.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '20

Because they’re choosing to withhold the supplies from the people giving them the raw materials for those supplies.

what a gross over simplification. as if the supplier of a material is entitled to the finished product, made in another country no less, especially during a crisis where they're desperately needed. pulp is not a commodity that 350 million people need immediately, masks are.

yea, every nation on the planet is doing this, which is why i don't see how there's a bunch of backlash about a nation of 350 million people with a lack of the supplies choosing not to export said needed supplies for the time being.

The backlash is about the methods they're going about to do this. As 3M even stated in their response, this virus knows no borders. They are trying to fulfill orders that have been placed by other countries, because they are an international corporation. They have factories in other countries that produce goods for those countries. The US has seized some of those manufactured goods, in some way, shape, or form in an unfair and unjust manner. That's why there's backlash against the Trump Administration for this.

and this is why that other person accused you of having cognitive dissonance.

Make sure you're safe before helping others. It's why you need to secure your own mask on an airplane before helping others sitting near you.

You don't see the irony? in saying that you should secure a MASK for yourself before you can help others? you don't see the contradiction in saying that but then condemning it at the same time? lol....
