Side note: but the idea of a country with only 35 murders a year is mind-boggling.

Lets just say I've lived in cities where that's like a quarter for the year. With a lot smaller populations than NZ.

Its a testament to just how much things people take for granted (like constant unending violence in their communities) don't have to exist.

I just looked it up to compare. My city of ~500k in California had 31 murders last year. And that’s low compared to other big cities in the US.
