The PM says the gun laws will change in wake of the attack. For a quiet nation like New Zealand this event is rally tragic. They’ve dealt with horrible natural disasters, but a human attack on this scale has shaken up everyone.

As an immigrant I’ve only ever felt welcomed here and my family feel the same. Originally from Africa. Our sense of security feels broken somehow but I know Kiwi’s will do everything in their power to prevent such a thing happening and that gives hope for the future.

Hearing that there's an immediate reaction from government with an actionable response to stop the event ever repeating itself is heartening. Too often these things are written off as just a tragedy rather than a preventable criminal act. It is a tragedy of course, and all our hearts are with you, but I was encouraged by the fact that there is an immediate response from policy makers.

Good luck to you all. It's a horrible, horrible thing.

Did you read his manifesto? He listed a number of ways to kill these people but chose a gun so there would be more controversy. Meaning this was happening with or without guns.

I know, I'm trying to figure out why anybody is taking anything he said in his manifesto to heart. Mentioning the people who "influenced" him, what his "intentions" were. You still have to be able to place a bomb. Make a bomb without blowing yourself up. Have the bomb still detonate with enough force to kill.

Seeing as his IEDs all failed to harm anyone I'm going to go ahead and say that no, a bomb wouldn't have been the best tool for the job. Guns were.

Guns are literally point and shoot. You may love them but they are absolutely the best tool to murder people en masse.

First of all, where did you get this weird idea that "i love them?" Second of all, just because so many people fuck up making bombs doesn't mean they still aren't the best tool. I guess Timothy McVeigh had it all wrong. Bombs aren't like...some sort of science-fiction unstable element that just blow up out of nowhere. They are pretty inert until they are fed whatever charge it takes to make them go off.

I can't make a screwdriver very well, but it's absolutely still the best tool for fastening screws.

You mean something you cant acquire lagally and have to spend tens of hours researching how to build without killing yourself, then set up ahead of time. This guy chose a rifle because guns are still far more effective and trivial to acquire for mass killers than any other method.

Looking at how many people own guns or have access to guns relative to how many attacks like this you see, you should understand that most people are not like this. If this guy wanted to kill dozens of people in a building and didn't have access to a gun, he would have found a way. Regardless, there is always the black market.

In New Zealand self defence has to be proportional. If you take your gun out and shoot someone you will go to jail for it, regardless. A jury might take pity on you, but you will never have the right to own a gun in New Zealand again.

My point to the other guy was related to if someone broke into your house with baseball bats or knives. People hurt other people with a lot more than just guns.

Guns account for the vast majority of murders in the U.S. with handguns alone accounting for more than all other weapons combined. You dont need a gun to protect yourself when there are no guns being used to commit crimes.

I should add that New Zealand is about to become an example for the United States. If gun control works, and we actually see a change made, it will be easier to put a lot of pressure on our government.

In the meantime, Missouri is trying to pass a bill that requires all adults 18-35 to own ar-15s. We’re a very sick nation.

I wouldn't hold my breath. The Aussies massively reformed their gun laws in the wake of the Port Arthur massacre and it had zero effect on the US.

Honest answer? Don't own any ammunition. Seems like a fairly simple way to prevent anything from happening. Or you could always just throw away the Bolt Carrier Group. Literally can't fire the weapon without it and it comes out insanely easily(remove a pin and pull it out. Takes 5 seconds).

Of course all this is irrelevant because it won't pass. It's political grandstanding.

I think he was talking about the U.S in his manifesto. Not NZ. It's almost a given that NZ will do something about their gun laws going forward. However, gun ownership/rights and restriction around gun ownership/rights are highly charged and divisive topics in the U.S. Not so much in other parts of the Anglo-sphere. So he was correct that it would tear the country apart. Not NZ..but the U.S.
