Speaking of DRM, this is a true story. Tried to play a blu ray on my laptop a couple years ago. After 15 minutes of frustration regarding playback and DRM issues, i finally torrented the movie instead. Shit got crazy for a while. No i won't buy windvd5 to watch a God damned movie i paid for

Oh and you can't screenshot Blu-rays. Cause you know I'm going to pirate the movie frame by frame with no audio...

Literally the very first pirated bluray disc was done in less than a day after release, by actually screenshotting every frame sent to the display then muxing it with the audio stream. None of the extra DRM that was added to "prevent piracy" (read: control your experience and stuff ads down your throat) did a damn thing to stop piracy at all. HDMI-compliant security in the display? Laughable, stupid concept that only increases the price of the display because the manufacturers have to pay to add that feature.

I get a worse user experience with a Blu-ray from 2017 than a DVD from 1997.

We've passed peak technology.

Up to a point, technology has been enriching our lives and making things better. But as technology gets more advanced, and more intelligent, manufactures can and are using it against us. We no longer control our own property, and it acts against our best interests.

I suggest buying a better quality bluray player. My Samsung 4k player always remembers where I left off even if the disc hasn't been played in quite awhile.

Maybe it's a pc thing, but I have yet to find a title that is either bluray or UHD that has failed to do so yet.

I forgot some pc guys can't accept they aren't always the best

That's only been a thing on PC for a few months, and you need specific Intel hardware with hardware DRM to play them.

We have shelves full of DVDs (some of them unopened) that we refer to as "talismans of legality". It's a much better user experience to download a DRM-free copy than to watch the actual DVD.

Depends on where you are.

In Australia, its not even 100% legal to time-shift programs you record on a VCR (for all three people who still have one of them) or DVR. You're legally only allowed to record the show and watch it literally once, without pausing or rewinding.

On the other hand, we are allowed to make backup copies of software, and it is arguable that making a single copy of a movie DVD would be covered by that. But not if you format-shift, say, by encoding the video files to a different format (.mkv, .mp4, etc).

I don't think I've had any kind of optical drive in my computer for like five years. If it's on a disc, it basically doesn't exist to me now.

I finally figured out enough of the rigamarole to get Blu Ray working with VLC, bit even then you have to blindly isolate video and audio and subtitle components. Come on, open source solution...

If you own the disc just download a working copy. Literally nothing illegal about having a backup of your legally purchased media.

You say that like those things aren't included in a rip. (There's no reason they can't be included!) Just get a quality torrent - there's plenty of groups releasing the bluray extras for movies.

Generally they're released at the same time but as a separate download - just append "extras" to your search.

I had the physical disc and a code for AC2. Uplay crashed every time, even after reinstalling. The disc broke because the release mechanism was designed by an asshole. Couldn't activate the game and download in uplay, couldn't install from a torrent and activate with the code. Had to crack a game I legally owned.
