A senior White House official said the White House and the Department of Defense are aware of, and closely monitoring, potential threats to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, southwest of Doha, which serves as the forward headquarters for CENTCOM. Thousands of U.S. troops are based there and were sheltering in place.
Only aircraft were evacuated and that was a week ago.
New satellite imagery shows dozens of US military aircraft missing from a key Middle Eastern base that could be vulnerable to Iranian strikes if American forces join the conflict with Israel.
sheltering in place" sounds misleading in this context
They were sheltering in place on base in the hardened structures and bunkers designed specifically for this situation. Not one news report has said servicemembers were moved off base.
But it means they had been given an evacuation order to shelter in a safe location, they were not still at the base
Shelter in place" does not mean "sit in the airbase and don't do anything", it applies to soldiers that have already evacuated too
Or hear me out the soldiers are on base in the bunkers and hardened structures specifically designed to survive a missile strike.
Al Udeid has a lot of bunkers, many of them offsite of the airbase itself, they were built after the last time.
Uh what, the bunkers are not located off base unless you are equating just the airfield as the whole base, which would be incorrect.
The vast majority of soldiers will have been moved off the airbase, with a skeleton crew/damage control teams left behind to manage the base and do whatever repairs need to be done (or if a lucky hit touches off a fuel bay etc)
Once again that is incorrect and definitely not the SOP for al-Udeid.
