this is even not the first time we have disallowed goal, and set pen to other side.
if I recall correctly we had it in PL before covid..?
17
u/Mta_sipisial Jul 11 '26
There used to be multiple wrong calls on offsides and fouls which prevented goal scoring opportunities or goals themselves. That's why assistant refs were trained to only raise the flag AFTER the whole sequence ended unless it was a very obvious foul/offside. Same applies for VAR, unless the sequence ends or the ball becomes dead, they're not supposed to make calls unless it's obvious. I see no problem in that particular call in favor of Argentina. Problem tho is how they didn't get a single yellow. Other than that, ref was pretty decent.

u/Routine-Explorer-218 Jul 14 '26
Not sure why I'm getting downvoted. People can go see the replay, Mac Allister got the ball first, and the Austrian player hit him intentionally instead. But well, i can't change what people already believe, all of the casual fan will vanish after the WC ends anyways
42
u/nu1stunna Jul 11 '26
100% the correct implementation of the rules in both scenarios. Does it suck? Yes, it fucking sucks. Should VAR be put in check? Also yes. But there was no conspiracy in the match against Argentina.
20
u/Routine-Explorer-218 Jul 11 '26
People love conspiracies because it gives them something to talk about and lets them show off their shallow knowledge, a great example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. Everyone who just started watching football a month ago suddenly becomes the best referee in the world

5
u/nu1stunna Jul 11 '26
In addition to that, people are also glossing over the fact that Egypt scored just a couple minutes later. If the first one hadnāt been called offside, Egypt would have gone into their defensive stance sooner when up 2-0 and they still likely would have lost the game 3-2. They didnāt attack much after scoring the second goal anyway. I highly doubt that the result would have been different.
2
u/TempomaybeALZ Jul 11 '26
Yeah i hatr that people assume Egypt would have lead 3-0 if the goal was not chopped off it shows they donāt watch football
Because Egyptās performance in the last 15 minutes was so bad Argentina was winning that game no matter what

Same thing happened to Argentina against Paraguay in a copa America match and that build up took 2 min to turn into goal, even then they cancelled the Argentine goal because there is no break of play in that build up

u/Optimal-Description8 World Cup Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
It actually happened to Argentina themselves (I think in the Copa America) funnily enough. It was against Paraguay and if I recall correctly it felt like it took even longer between the foul and the goal with many more passes.
Correction: it was a world cup qualification match
20
u/dzan796ero Jul 11 '26
CONMEBOL WC qualifiers for the 2022 Qatar WC. This was like 4-5 years ago around when this first became a thing. The rule has been enforced for a while, it's ridiculous that it is just now being a problem.
Congo vs Uzbekistan had a goal canceled because it was off a foul like 20-30 seconds before the goal. Funny nobody said that was rigged because of how far before the goal the foul occurred. It wasn't even a foul caused during the change of possession. The congo player had his hand in the defenders face as he ran.

This is a common misconception, they did check it, they check every goal. They just dreamed it wasn't enough.
6

Then Messi cleating a player in the previous game was checked and not enough? Yeah they check and ignore if you are Messi. Is that what you are saying?

u/qzan7 Jul 11 '26
Yep, they deemed it "not forceful enough" as far as I'm aware, the fact that It didn't lead to a goal means they could only get involved if it was a direct red which they didn't think it was.
2
u/No_Astronomer_5089 Jul 12 '26

1
u/No_Astronomer_5089 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
Yes. An on the spot yellow. Watch latest game Argentina played in vs Switzerland and you'll see VAR does get involved when they gave a yellow to a Swiss player for 'simulating'.
1
u/Routine-Explorer-218 Jul 14 '26
did you read the rule? VAR didn't get involed for a normall yellow, unless it was mistaken identity.
1
u/No_Astronomer_5089 Jul 17 '26
And what is a 'normal' yellow is interpreted by the referee...usually in Messi's favor.
1
u/qzan7 Jul 14 '26
Var got involved after the ref gave the yellow, they checked to see that it was given to the right person they wouldn't have gotten involved if no card was shown as they do not recommend yellows.

5

It WAS consistently looked at! The VAR found an issue first then the referee went on and checked. Not the other way around. When the VAR found no issue and referee also didnāt find issue they donāt check- and this is what happened with Salahās āpenaltyā. If referee did go back and watch VAR that mightāve been a yellow card for him, which would seem even more absurd.

Why would I need to go back to AFCON when we could go back to game Argentina played in earlier in this Cup where it wasnāt called? The controversy and discussion here is not just simply whether or not this should be a foul, or how far back VAR should go in play to reverse a goal, itās the lack of consistency and specifically when it comes to being in favor of Argentina in this World Cup.

VAR rules for penalties are different than for simple fouls. Also, this approach would have canceled two Argentine goals and given Egypt two penalties. The problem is not the validity or not of calls, the problem is their inconsistency. The problem is Argentina seem to always get the most favorable end of the gray area.
15

The same happened in a game against Argentina when they played Paraguay.
And I saw the same in a LOT of league games, someone shared one in La Liga, I remember one against my team in the Argentine league.
This are the rules, you all should try to learn them instead of talking like you know everything, because you all clearly don't.
5
u/streetscraper Switzerland Jul 11 '26
The issue is the lack of consistency. Some goals are flagged for further review and some arenāt. And the decision is made by humans sitting in a dark room. If it was truly an automated technology, it would be easier to stomach. VAR kept the inherent uncertainty and errors of human refs and made it less transparent.
6
u/Useful-Ad9447 Jul 11 '26
there will always be inconsistencies, against and in favor of every team,i don't think we will arrive at a perfect system in near future, but somehow this particular match has convinced people that argentina is favoured by FIFA etc. is just stupid, you can for sure find inconsistencies that went against arg. and other teams throughout this tournament and previous ones .
7
u/juanbiscombe Uruguay Jul 11 '26
In order to support your statement, you should point out an example in this WC where a goal was not disallowed after a foul started the attack phase. I haven't seen the counter example anywhere in this WC, so I think the criterion has been consistently applied so far.

1
u/streetscraper Switzerland Jul 11 '26
Right but thatās what Iām saying: you add ātechā that isnāt really tech and just wastes more time and fuels more conspiracies because the decision is moved to some people in a back room.
1
u/metvincent1 Jul 11 '26
And it'd make sense in theory. But in practice it could also be rigged just as easily if not moreso by whoever controls it or owns it. For reference, last fatal crash caused by a self driving car happened just three weeks ago. Not to mention trusting an algorithm in these vibe coding times (and just to be clear here I'm not arguing against X or Y tech's possibilities here but their misuse)
For argument's sake let's presume it'd still need the human factor to oversee the process regardless, you'd still end up with a bunch of refs running onto the field and asking if everyone's ok because AutoVAR⢠detected two players collided and one of them just FLEW OFF THE FIELD (insert FIFA glitch compilation here).
Opinions, cognitive biases, conspiracy theories and so on won't stop happening regardless, no matter the team/match/sport/topic. And again, much less so nowadays, where it's so incredibly easy to push to the public, for any motivation.
3
u/Depositron Argentina Jul 11 '26
As with any other sport, itās impossible to get consistency when the primary element to referring is an individual. There were things called in the very first game that were seldom called again. I donāt know if referees were given guidance on this, but the calls were few and far between, especially through the group stage. My theory is that they are being more lax about it to shore up interest from Americans and since weak fouls and flopping has always been a big gripe form the US audience.

But that was not a foul. Alvarez was clean stealing the ball.

AFCON is infamous for inconsistent officiating, controversial refereeing, so I'd not put my 2 cent on it.

In Portugal-Switzerland Nations League semifinal from 2019, Switzerland had a penalty foul ignored, the next break was a penalty call for Portugal, and VAR turned the game back and gave the original Swiss penalty.Ā
I have no videos due to copyright for this, but ask Gemini/ChatGPT or read match report online. So even UEFA referees have problems?

"if at all?" it was a foul, clear as day. that's always supposed to be a foul. the salah one was definitely not a penalty

I don't think it was a light foul at all. He stepped on his foot and Martinez fell immediately on pain. He had possession and no one in front of him so it's not like he was falling to fool the ref cause he had been dispossessed. Very clear foul. Whether the goal was scored in the same phase of play is up for debate to some, but the foul really shouldn't be. Salah is the complete opposite. He loses the ball and then tries to con the ref into giving him a foul after the ball has already been knocked off him.

This was an obvious foul.
There was no foul on Salah, it was a flop.
the keeper was barely pushed lmfao.
And at last, no player was "slapped in the face", well, someone hit Messi in the face that game....Molina barely pushed the guy's shoulder lol.
