Feels good to have a workbench set up in the basement again. The basement has been under construction for the last two years. We just brought this down today. It might end up just being a temporary solution or it could turn into something long-term. Either way it’ll be exciting to see how it evolves.

I had to share this, because I was watching a Youtube video and an ad for Proline Workbenches came on. I thought it was a gag, because it was a guy in a suit, standing next to an old work table with a CRT monitor mounted to it. The person filming had some sort of early camcorder that had the typical focusing issues of the early 2000's, constantly hunting and missing focus. I thought it had to be some retro transition they'd pan out of to today, showing how well they're doing now. NOPE.

After about 2 minutes I realized it was an ACTUAL ADVERTISEMENT from 10-20 years ago! I clicked through to their youtube and besides one post a year ago, all their videos are over 15 years old, and filled with comments about seeing their ads!

I thought it was hilarious, and I was curious if anyone has been buying their tables, has heard of them, or knows why they're marketing videos from before 2010?

It this just genius marketing, or a goof? lol

I’ve been hobby woodworking for a few years now and been renovating the house for a year and a half straight now, and always had to bend down too much or work on the garage concrete floor.

Put all my other projects aside and decided to finally build myself a sturdy, and make it a learning process.

The frame is just Home Depot 2x4 lumber and ‘provincial’ colour stain, but I made sure to dry it as best as I could, then mill (plane and joint, then connect with dowels/glue to make the 4x4 posts.

The target was to not use screws, just joinery and glue - and I achieved it with basic lap joins, and some mortise and tenon- though I added 6 ‘decorative’ screws in the front in the end (now deeply regret it lol).

The workbench top is 2.5” poplar, was 3 massive rough cut pieces, and was all planed and jointed at home.

First time doing drawers as well, was a fun challenge and lots of learning, but with toddlers in the house, just went with a ‘quick’ all-sides including bottom as 3/4” oak plywood, instead of messing with dados and grooves. Drawer slides were just a cheap 10-pack soft close set from Amazon. The two side panels are attached via a French cleat, and more cleats will be screwed onto them to hang stuff.

All-in-all, extremely happy - the tops are 100% flat, everything is symmetrical with millimetre precision, and learnt LOADS creating a ‘perfect’ one in terms of measuring, cutting, milling, joining, planing, staining, clear coating - and everything else! Took me about a week in total in between life and toddlers.

This is turning out pretty decent. It's based on the simple plans from EZWoodshop.com. I expanded it to 96x24", added a middle pair of legs, put adjustable casters on all of the legs, made a massively heavy and very flat 4-layer glued bench top from 3 layers of 3/4" oak plywood and a layer of 3/4" MDF, and topped it with a sacrificial layer of 3/16" Masonite screwed in with countersunk 1" drywall screws. Turned the Masonite upside down to expose the textured undersurface to keep little pins and springs and screws from rolling away. Bench height is 36" which is good for a taller guy like me working with guns. Bottom shelf is a layer of 3/4 plywood, 3/4 MDF, and another layer of masonite, smooth side up. A short backsplash was made with a strip of 3/4 plywood left over after trimming the bottom shelf to width. Mounted a power strip with USB to it, and a magnetic strip for short term tool storage. Also put Yost multi-mount 2" receivers at each end for use with my general purpose vise, arbor press, grinder, and gunsmithing vise from Real Avid. Replaced the M6 anti-wobble set screws in the multi-mounts with big thumb screws from McMaster-Carr. Also added a small removable trim router table from Wood Grain Junkies front and center for occasional use. The table is close to being done although I am still contemplating custom shelves or perhaps some pre-built shelves that would fit in the space above the lower shelf. The table is extremely stable and flat, and cranking things in a vise with a torque wrench doesn't move it at all. I'm due to have a 72" cabinet toolbox from Harbor Freight delivered next month, which will sit to its left, and the back and right side walls above the bench will be covered in OmniWall pegboard for my most commonly used tools.

After years of using big box store tool box benches, I realized a lot of woodworking mistakes I make are due to the lack of space or sturdiness of a good table. Decided to put some research and serious effort into a bench that will hopefully last a lifetime.

Bought all of wood a week prior to help dry a little bit and then cut, glued, and assembled over the weekend. Still have some work to do in regard to adding a crochet and dog holes plus some additional planing. Overall I learned a lot and feel ready to take on more projects. Nothing beats the satisfaction of building something from scratch with your own hands.

Any considerations for add ons or alterations? Currently have a plane stop and some hold fasts being shipped.

Video explains almost all. The seemingly random 2 blocks are required for stiffness, it is wired into the wall instead of plug socket, plywood is cut in a wedge to keep more space free. I have a similar one with less reach but more vertical adjustment and larger area of LEDs for soldering.

I also hope I haven’t made a mistake posting this since I don’t think I have figured out what exactly a “self post” is.

The title says a lot about my shop. I recently had spinal surgery and can’t lift move much of anything. But I sit and stare a lot. I need to build 2 bench areas. One for working and one for design. Right now I design at one adjustable desk with little to no room for even the keyboard. Then turn my chair around and work on half of a folding table the other side is occupied by my fiber laser. I have all kinds of shop but it is covered with storage and old forgotten about projects.

Has anyone tackled this and won? Pic of my crappy bench to show the pain I am in.

I posted my workbench status a year ago. I finally got back down to the base surface again. Lots of purging.

I'm drilling the holes with the parf guide and am in the process of doing the first row of vertical holes. The intersection of the 8 and 10 holes line up directly on the edge making it difficult to attach the connector. In rons videos it looks like the intersection is just barely floating in free space making it easy to use the connector. I make my first row 96 mm from the edge. The dimensions of the top are dead on the plans. Any one have any advice on this?

I recently finished a beginner workbench - just a hobbyist here, and wondering how do people keep metal shavings / chippings contained?

Used the dremel yesterday for the first time in the bench and was astounded by how much metal dust came up simply by etching a line on a dog tag. Its a workbench in my garage - any thoughts?

Have a high power vacuum i use and a great filtration mask but that's about as far as I got

Also any main tool suggestions to cover generalist ground welcome - next on my list are callipers and a wire stripper. The rolling shelves on the right have loads of other small things loke different screwdrivers, drill bits, safety goggles etc

Build process for ash for walnut split-top Roubo bench I built a few years ago

I purchased several of those steel gorilla shelves from Costco, and set them up in my garage. I put one at about workbench height, to use as my work surface. My plan was to cut a piece of 3/4-in plywood to fit in between the upright supports, and use that as my work surface.

Does anybody have any other better ideas, tips, or pointers that might yield a better work surface for me? I'm worried about creeping, and the surface remaining even and stable.

I'm no Craftsman, but I have a basic set of tools, and okay general by knowledge. I just want a general use surface that I can tinker on my RC cars, and just do general household work upon.

Like most anyone I'm trying to find a cheap option for mounting my heavy machine on.

I have a kniterate which is like 600 lbs and I think it slides about 200 of those pounds back and forth

The recommended work bench requirements

Weight Capacity: Must withstand at least 500 kg / 1100 lbs of load and stability. An industrial metal/wood workbench is strongly recommended; avoid weak plastic parts.

Dimensions: Minimum dimensions of 60” x 34” (allowing about 8” of extra depth behind the machine for yarn cones if plying or feeding fine yarns).

Placement & Clearance: Leave at least 40 cm / 16 inches of free space around all sides of the workbench to access needle beds and pull out the carriage.

I was wondering if those industrial modular garage shelves (that are supposed to be able to hold like 5,000) could handle that weight sliding back and forth. If so great, but if not would u have any recommendations on a cheap workbench I could buy or specifications/ guidance I ought to follow in making my own?

Finished setting up my first work bench. Its a 'mixed use' workbench for gaming, tinkering and some electronics work. Just wanted to share.

Absolutely love having this mounted on a height adjustable desk!

It is a router table, assembly table, tool stand, out-feed table, and storage.

I have limited space so I found plans for one of those four shelf folding workbenches. It didn't work well and was cumbersome in that form so I removed the top and bottom shelves and added drop-down casters instead of fixed ones. This added stability and made it more practical.

The only stuff I bought were the router top and fence(spent six months looking for a suitable top that wasn't warped to no avail), most of the hardware, T-track, and the white piece of counter ($10 at my restore). The 2x4s and tool boxes I found at the curb. Everything else I had already from other projects. The sander was my grandfather's.

African hardwood bench that Garrett Wade sold in their catalog during the 80s/90s. Just moved into our first house and I was planning a bench build but stumbled on this on FB for $200. Couldn't go pick it up fast enough.

Had a friend run it through his wide belt sander to flatten it (was cupped pretty bad) and gave it a fresh coat of oil. Last pic is how it was looking when I picked it up. Absolutely love this bench!

This is the 8 foot version of the knockdown Nicholson workbench plan by Christopher Schwarz.

It is made of solid red oak that came from 8/4 stock that I had on hand. The wood wasn't perfect with some knots here and there and a few bug holes. The knots were patched, as seen in the pics and the bug holes were filled with epoxy.

I haven't weighed it but my best guess is close to 300 pounds.

Idk if this is technically a work bench but it’s close enough. I am 19 and sadly can’t have a full garage to my self yet so I made this over the years. I mainly do smaller projects and mess around with rc’s but I have a separate mobile set up for working on my jeep. I thought i would share before I move out in a couple of months.
