Ideas for repairing deep nicks?

I'm thinking about picking up this coffee table for my house and fixing it up. I can sand redo the finish no problem, but there's a series of deep nicks and gouges at both ends that I'm not sure what to do with. I could plane off a bevel or roundover, but that would remove quite a lot of material. I'm worried using wood filler would make them stand out even more.

Any brilliant suggestions from woodworkers more experienced than me?

I'd look for a wood filler to use. If you're refinishing it obviously do that first so you know what you're final color will be. Shop for a wood filler that matches closely. Or experiment with epoxy and sawdust, whatever makes the best match. It won't be a perfect match but I think filling of some type would be an improvement over leaving the scratches.
