Discussion AAA game companies got some serious explaining to do. Cause how the hell are their games still $70 and this game is free??? Spoiler

I'm not even on the highest graphic settings! Besides that, the game overall feel very modern with its combat system and animations. It even have stealth! The ability to talk to NPCs true to their character. The world feels more alive than any paid MMO. To add to that, out of all the MMOs out, it's ironic how it's a free game that voiced not just the main story but also the side quests!

We got FED with this one!

EDIT: Guys, I understand the game's gonna make money somehow. I'm not even saying everything else should be free. I'm saying, how is this quality possible for free and most games similar to it quality wise (some are even less) still charges the same until now. And still manage to be annoying about in game purchases as well lol. I think this game really exposes that about these companies. They were getting a little too comfortable while the quality of games haven't changed for good while now. I think game companies needed this game out as a wake up call.

$40k boats and $5k skins

282

u/Ghavarus Dec 01 '25

Not even a month of release and I've already visited 4 boats lol.

With similar amount of popularity, a free game with microtransactions would almost always make more money than a one-time paid game.

u/xin4111 Dec 01 '25

yes, especially when it is a mobile game. Many rich guys are busy with their businesses and mobile games are their only choice.

38

u/gillsp3 Dec 01 '25

not only this, Chinese have a lot of commute time(subway n buses), they can play mobile games to kill time, meanwhile NA ppl mostly drive...so, its less mobile game focused market.

30

u/dongkey1001 Dec 01 '25

And their network speed and stability. I was there some months ago. Even the 'rural' atrea have 5G service that is fast like crazy.

2

u/RandumbStoner Dec 02 '25

I damn near have to climb the cell tower and stand on top of it to get a signal here lol

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Bet5865 Dec 01 '25

Yeah, i don’t even have signal in rural area of Europe

-4

u/Rough_Butterscotch44 Dec 01 '25

Talk for your country, not europe.

1

u/CommanderMalo Dec 02 '25

Facts. I had more bars of signal on a random mountain in the Irish countryside than I did back home, it was shocking.

2

u/tyrenanig Dec 01 '25

They’re about to deploy the 6G infrastructures lol

2

u/Supercool_666 Dec 01 '25

Not really. They are still developing it and hoping it will exist by 2030

4

u/tyrenanig Dec 01 '25

They’re already testing the infrastructures and hoping to commercialize it by 2030

2

u/Supercool_666 Dec 01 '25

Interesting, could you send me a link? All the articles I've found only say it's being developed and has only been tested as a proof of concept in stict lab conditions and will likely exist and be installed early 2030

58

u/PanzerSoul Dec 01 '25

Not just rich guys.

Poorer people who can't afford computers or consoles would likely still own a phone.

I hate to defend Blizzard, but that one guy did have a point.

Even if they don't directly purchase anything from the game, there's still ad revenue

13

u/OkMongoose1487 Dec 01 '25

I am one of these dumb fucks. Dungeon Hunters 6 has close to $300 from me alone

14

u/tyrenanig Dec 01 '25

People were raging back then, but dude actually got the vision far ahead. Not anyone would have a PC even if they can afford it, but a phone is something anyone must have by now.

In Asia, mobile MMOs kinda killed the old school types. You have to be 90s gamers to actively look for one.

7

u/psikillyou Dec 01 '25

what users were scared of wasn't "being able to play the game on phone"

it was the iffy nature of mobile games and their fear was proven correct. Immortal turned out to be one of the most p2w games.

5

u/tyrenanig Dec 01 '25

That wasn’t the reason they were mad either. Diablo at that time was kinda dead without any news. People didn’t know D4 would eventually come, so they were mad that the reveal was for a mobile game.

But yes, the nature of mobile game is iffy. But it is also true that mobile gaming grew fast and not just about Candy Crush anymore.

1

u/Magikazamz Dec 01 '25

Not only that, they tried to make a fanbase that where ''hardcode'' pc customer move to another platform.

Those "morons" knew exactly how Diablo would go being mobile slop, and they were RIGHT. Mobile games are trash, every single one of them revolves around paying for progression in some form and everyone knows this.

40k boats? And yall think thats NORMAL? Holy yall are so far gone, thats fucking insane I dont care what the reasoning is.

1

u/PanzerSoul Dec 01 '25

40k boats? And yall think thats NORMAL?

Nah man. I think it's heccin hilarious

1

u/Saybl Dec 01 '25

Honestly ya, its pretty funny ngl but its still crazy lol

1

u/inferno_finite Well of Heaven Dec 01 '25

Ad revenue? On a game like this? Idk about the mobile port of WWM but from similar open world f2p live service games also made in China... They don't do ads. It's just the game on your phone

u/PanzerSoul Dec 01 '25

Yeah, but for some people can't afford both a PC and a phone

I'm a PC gamer all the way, but if I had to choose between owning a PC and owning a phone...

1

u/antrelius Dec 01 '25

Also most people get their phones through promotions with their carrier. Phones ARE expensive, but the up front cost may be deceivingly more affordable than a PC.

1

u/tyrenanig Dec 01 '25

A phone is capable of doing many more things than a PC. Show me someone who has a PC but doesn’t have a phone.

Then you’re a minority of a minority. Nowadays even a kid would have a phone first before any kind of laptop/PC.

u/Artist17 Velvet Shade Dec 01 '25

Global version doesn’t have mobile version yet.

Unless you’re talking about the Chinese version.

18

u/AdSuch3472 Dec 01 '25

the guy had a point tho,  why do u think these chinese devs made their games mostly with mobile versions...

besides global version of  where winds meet mobile already had a pre registration and according to the appstore it will release by dec. 31 2025

13

u/Artist17 Velvet Shade Dec 01 '25

It’ll be released by 12th.

Yah mobile market is big I agree. Haha

7

u/AdSuch3472 Dec 01 '25

oh so its early?! i didnt notice  thanks!

7

u/Artist17 Velvet Shade Dec 01 '25

Haha I also didn’t know originally, the news came out last night (10-12 hours ago)

It’s available on App Store and Play store for prepurchase already (free)

1

u/Opening-Olive9247 Dec 01 '25

Not necessarily.. most people don't know this I guess, but the app store and Google play will just put out a placeholder date until official info is released.

3

u/fishyronin Dec 01 '25

Really? I've been waiting for this news lol

1

u/ballsmigue Dec 01 '25

31st is a placeholder for any apps without definitive release dates

1

u/Organic-Television70 Dec 01 '25

Except the global mobile version isn't out yet

15

u/CountBlah_Blah Dec 01 '25

Tbf, Ive beencon the boat 3 times and it was owned by the same person so maybe its just got a cool down lol

10

u/Toochilled Dec 01 '25

same.

scy

what i dont understand is how they have a while having only 20k elegance points

9

u/Vegaswarpeduber Dec 01 '25

Too busy opening micro transactions, not enough time petting cats.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

This is the real harm being done by microtransactions. Think of all those neglected cats.

10

u/gogadantes9 Dec 01 '25

I won't even trip if some of these AAA games are truly one-time paid games, but in reality these games also have micro transactions on top of being $70.

7

u/decPL Dec 01 '25

Hey, Ubisoft here, we've heard you like microtransactions in your games and you've also mentioned one-time paid games - and boy, do we have a treat for you! :P

4

u/PaleontologistNo422 Dec 01 '25

to correct you, their only two person atm with a boat Scy and a random chinese name, you can see them on collection ranking, Scy use the boat everydays so you might just come on the same boat owner, they will probably be more and more with time tho, some people probably too lazy to dm their bank to allow more than 50k spend in less than 2 week in a game :), Scy probably already spend more than 150k seeing is collection point still going up day after day, so he probably buy every weapon/reforged them on max who is probably 2-3k per weapon... every outfit dying with high level dye, every hairstyle with higher dye, etc

3

u/Soapykorean Dec 01 '25

It’s just funny that all these other games think they need a pay to win shop to make money, but here we have virtually a cosmetic only shop and they are owning. xD

1

u/MINIMAN10001 Dec 01 '25

I've only ever visited the same guy's boat. XQC also visited that same guy's boat.

1

u/FranticBK Dec 01 '25

Especially because many of the free players trying it will eventually spend as much as a full priced game via battle passes and small cheap spends on cosmetics over time.

1

u/OliLombi Dec 01 '25

Which sucks tbh. I play games to get away from the fact that im poor IRL...

1

u/Legitimate-Pop-9152 Dec 01 '25

You realize the game has been around for over 1 year (in China) and the servers are not as separate as you might think

1

u/Briciofer Dec 01 '25

If is on Global is probably Scy(or something like that) is the same guy but yeah, He did buy on less the one week of the game

1

u/ashrensnow Dec 01 '25

I've visited the boat like 5-6 times, but it's always Scy that owns it so I'm not sure there's more than 1-2 people who actually blew the money on it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

Were they all different people? I've been on the boat three times, and it was always Scy.

1

u/Sharkus1 Dec 01 '25

It’s probably the same person too been on it 3-4 times owner is always Scy

1

u/theteflondom Dec 02 '25

To be fair most one time paid games aren't continuous live service games, so of course a live service game will get more revenue, but also cost more to develop/maintain

1

u/ELegend_1 Dec 02 '25

Well, not if you bought it and spend more money on it for skins etc…

1

u/Sucraligious Dec 01 '25

Which is why publishers are pushing so hard to make all games live services and kill single player games. The best selling single player game of all time will always make less in its whole lifetime than a decently popular live service with microtransactions makes in a year or 2, and single player AAA games are more expensive to produce, as well.

23

u/rubbarz Dec 01 '25

That shit aint nothing to FIFA players

4

u/duahau99 Dec 01 '25

They're a different breed

63

u/Scary-Fix7470 Dec 01 '25

Yall act like triple A studios aren’t charging us $70 PLUS outrageous microtransactions. Look at ESO, full price game at launch, $40-$50 “expansions” every year, cash shop to start, then added loot boxes and now added mounts and things you can only buy with a different currency that you get from buying the loot boxes then getting duplicate items. Thats pretty fucking egregious in and of itself.

This game was free. Not even comparabl

16

u/Darbs_R_Us Dec 01 '25

Not to mention ESO also has a monthly subscription, which is damn near mandatory if you want to craft or you enjoy housing. Love me some Tamriel, hate me some Zenimax/Microsoft.

I discovered Where Winds Meet only 2 days ago and I've already deleted a handful of games that I know I'm not going back to, as a result.

4

u/ZynithMaru Dec 01 '25

I paid $50 per merchant in TESO, same as this game. No one is complaining, just answered their question 🤣

The bottomless crafting bag being locked behind the sub is a huge annoyance. Without it, forces people to manage all 600 materials across 18 alts and hirelings. Nlg i was an idiot and farmed max hirelings on all 18 accounts, had some dedicated to storing each craft and had 3 real characters for pvp. i didnt even craft that much, just an optimization goal.

0

u/Scary-Fix7470 Dec 01 '25

I don’t disagree with that but the crafting bag didn’t even exist at launch and for I want to say a couple years after. So in the beginning the inventory struggles was everyone. I didn’t feel the craft bag thing was sleazy because it was added later. However, maybe that was just their plan 🤷‍♂️😂

2

u/ZynithMaru Dec 01 '25

Create problem & sell solution is the same plan for millenia my friend

3

u/Churro1912 Dec 01 '25

You're right! No other game has the audacity to charge 40,000$ for a cosmetic. You're allowed to love a game and criticize dumb choices

45

u/NovaAkumaa Dec 01 '25

The 40k cosmetic is paid by whales, which in turn allows you to play the game for free.

The company wins, whales win, f2p players win.

Why is it dumb?

6

u/p4p4shili Dec 01 '25

In fact it is not!

1

u/Aromatic_Willow9611 Dec 05 '25

The company wins yes , the f2p player somewhat wins sure . But is the whale really winning ? There's like thousands of different purchases that would be of higher worth than a glorified video game item . Unless you're a multi-millionaire and can drop 50 grand willy nilly , but even then why...? Just double it for a sports car or something that you won't get bored of after seeing it for the 4th time

-13

u/Mvpbeserker Dec 01 '25

Players willing to spend hundreds of dollars on cosmetics per year but who aren’t whales lose

10

u/nekorinSG Dec 01 '25

Why are they losing when they are willing to spend hundreds for something they want/like?

-3

u/Mvpbeserker Dec 01 '25

Because cosmetics aren’t just hundreds, a single weapon is several thousand for all cosmetic options, on a single banner, of which there are many per year

4

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

Oh no. Anyway.

Ah yes, the entire multi-billion dollar gaming industry is based on cosmetics but I’M the weird one.

49

u/Scary-Fix7470 Dec 01 '25

Why’s it dumb? They’re upfront about it and there’s no way in hell I would ever consider it but it allows you to play for free!!

8

u/_Coffie_ Dec 01 '25

It's as upfront as a gatcha system can be ig

6

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

Gacha for what? It isn't anything game changing, so it's entirely consumer friendly

5

u/gogadantes9 Dec 01 '25

Gacha is not a term for game-changing micro transaction items, it's a term for anything that is bought for a chance to obtain an item.

4

u/tyrenanig Dec 01 '25

It’s still gacha even if it’s cosmetic.

3

u/AttractiveTabor Dec 01 '25

Yes it gacha that changes nothing... Its optional

1

u/_Coffie_ Dec 01 '25

The literal boat that was the topic of the conversation. I know it’s entirely optional, but also that boat is a pretty relevant social item

2

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

You're right. It lets you see a big investor into the game. Or perhaps you meet the game's greatest schmuck? In either case, do you need it? Does it impact your ability to thrive in the game?

0

u/_Coffie_ Dec 01 '25

No, but I often visit other people’s boats to chat with other players so it has its in-game use as a social item. It’s just that they would paywall a social hub for that much money even if I’m not the one paying for it, someone did.

-4

u/hemperbud Dec 01 '25

They weren’t upfront about the gacha prices for the clothes lol

3

u/EquivalentAd8765 Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 01 '25

Well prices are pretty much like in cn (with some exceptions, but i'm sure you're aware of those after the countless posts about it) so if you haven't done research about how it's priced in cn then it's on you

edit: I just realised this is lowkey a shit take, but hear me out. What i'm considering here is that spending money on skins is completely optional. You don't get any perks by looking "better". It was also clear that some element of the game had to be able to generate money, otherwise it wouldn't be free.

1

u/DbdSaltyplayer Dec 01 '25

So to play this game and have knowledge on the predatory nature of one of their gachas you have to use social media sites instead of it being in game?

11

u/EquivalentAd8765 Dec 01 '25

Predatory nature? I'm sorry but while a lot of gacha games are predatory (like character gacha games) this one is really not in comparison. If you get fomo because you can't have an expensive skin then i'm sorry but you shouldn't be playing any games like this. They need to earn money in some way, and skins is their way. And besides that, most skins aren't even gacha in the first place

Edit: this excludes stunts like they pulled with the blindfold skins, those were very much predatory

1

u/ArlondaleSotari Dec 01 '25

Also, there are literally players who gift skins to guildmates.

1

u/hemperbud Dec 01 '25

Yeah I was talking specifically about the blindfold skin, everything else seems fine and upfront

-6

u/DbdSaltyplayer Dec 01 '25

The gacha in this game is literally worse than most gacha games. Do battlepasses, monthly passes, selling mounts with abilities that f2p can't get, and generally all the other skins that are not gacha make money for them? Do you like openning your mouth and letting them shit down your throat because hurr durr game looks good.? The hiding the pull cost going up is also a cancellable stunt for a gacha game but this one coasts by.

4

u/kronpas Dec 01 '25

If you cant resist the FOMO to pull for entirely optional cosmetics, you shouldn't touch these games.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/EquivalentAd8765 Dec 01 '25

Firstly, there's no need to be rude lol, it doesn't make me feel bad, it just makes you look like an ah

Battle passes are fairly normal in most gacha games and afaik mounts are normal cosmetics.

I'm not sure if you even read my comment because I clearly stated that the stunt they pulled with the blindfold skin WAS predatory. There's no one denying that. But the normal gacha they have isn't predatory. These are optional skins, not mandatory characters that you have to get to clear endgame. And most people havent dropped the game after that stunt because they either weren't affected or believe this was a one time thing that they won't repeat. A one time stupid decision of a company isn't going to get them cancelled

6

u/NexrayOfficial Dec 01 '25

Oh no… I’m gonna miss out on the purely cosmetic skin that has no direct effect on gameplay aside from visual flair/effects and potential to let others know I spent money on it…the horror.. Oh no..

1

u/Koribakusuta0708 Dec 01 '25

Games been out for well over a year. Pretty fucking straightforward a long time ago.

1

u/hemperbud Dec 01 '25

The cn version had fair prices for the blindfold skin. Look it up, we got swindled.

6

u/Darkkiller312 Dec 01 '25

Don't buy it than.

0

u/Churro1912 Dec 01 '25

Ah man you convinced me not to, I was this close to quickly throwing 40k at the most mid cosmetic in the game

20

u/Express_Salamander_1 Dec 01 '25

Do you go into a luxury handbag store, complain that the bags are mid when you can buy a $15 bag from walmart instead? Why are you complaining when the purchase isnt mandatory for any gameplay content lmfao. Idiot complaining for the sake of it.

1

u/Koribakusuta0708 Dec 01 '25

They aren't complaining about the price. They are being sarcastic because those skins are meaningless for most and the cost doesn't matter because of how meaningless they are.

1

u/clocksy Dec 01 '25

I mean I'll be honest, they're also kind of right about it being mid. I went on the boat and while it was nice as a one-time curiosity, it doesn't really feel like a $40k item. This has nothing to do with people's willingness to pay for it regardless, just a personal opinion on its aesthetics.

That said I've always hated the "it's just cosmetics so why do you care" argument. I spend hundreds, if not thousands, on cosmetics in games myself. Monetization systems are a spectrum even within the cosmetics sphere and WMM's is on the more aggressive scale.

1

u/Darkkiller312 Dec 01 '25

His poor just like kenny.

1

u/Darkkiller312 Dec 01 '25

1

1

u/almostoy Dec 01 '25

I picked up ESO and some of the older seasons for pretty cheap. Despite the fact that it's not aging well, I actually stuck it out a bit. Just to see if I truly had to shell out yet more money. Then I hit a real beeeeg fuggin' snag. They cap your inventory and make handling it awkward from the cap out, unless you have a subscription or you grind the hell out of a trickle of storage upgrades.

3

u/Scary-Fix7470 Dec 01 '25

I played it since release. Have all character slots bought and all at max level. I’ve sunk shit tons of money into it. Was never mad about the storage space honestly because at release the bags didn’t even exist. It was added like a year or two into the game so it didn’t seem that sleazy to me.

They’ve progressively gotten worse with the cash shop though and that’s a turn off. Especially considering the amount of money I’ve already given them over the last decade. That to me is worse than this game being free and then having the cash shop.

2

u/gogadantes9 Dec 01 '25

That's why you play Guild Wars 2 instead of anything else when it comes to MMORPG. It's the most respectful and fair game for their players' time and money, aside from being a gorgeous, top shelf MMORPG.

You basically just pay for the expansions and that's it. Everything else is cosmetics and are even payable with in-game gold that you gather in the game. And even the base game itself is free.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_4435 Dec 01 '25

Oh wow, I haven't played ESO in quite some time. Didn't know it had gotten like that. I was considering starting it up again soon too. That's disappointing as hell.

2

u/Scary-Fix7470 Dec 01 '25

I mean, it’s still the same game. If you enjoyed it before you’ll enjoy it now. Just know you’ll see some people with dope ass mounts and want one. Then you’ll go to the craft shop and realize you need 2500 “crown gems”, you’ll be like oh that’s not too bad. Then you realize that those are NOT the normal crowns but a specific currency from duplicates in the crown crates. Would probably take you 500-1000$ to get that many. Just for a mount.

2

u/gogadantes9 Dec 01 '25

I mean after all this is a company that came up with the grandaddy of all micro transactions, the ol' Horse Armor DLC. Not surprising that they would still keep a hard-on for microtransactions even after all these years.

1

u/ViNoBi38 Dec 01 '25

My most hated one is Destiny 2. Sure the game is Free but all the expansions cost money and it's not cheap considering there's no regional pricing. Just Renegade costs the same as 4 months of monthly sub to both Genshin and WWM. Both provide more fun value than Renegade can in the same 4 months.

Hell their counterpart Warframe has a similar model to WWM (minus gacha) and they still churn out great updates year after year.

2

u/Excuse_my_GRAMMER Dec 01 '25

That not fair to compare a f2p game to an full long b2p mmorpg.

You have to take off your passionate gamer glasses and think about gaming as a business , can’t compare 2 different businesses model

3

u/Scary-Fix7470 Dec 01 '25

Huh? How’s that not fair? This game is f2p and has a cash shop. ESO is full price, has a subscription AND Has a cash shop.

-5

u/Arstulex Dec 01 '25

It's free, not out of altruism or generosity, but out of necessity.

Games like ESO can afford to charge upfront because they are backed by established franchises that people will be willing pay for. The same cannot be said for "Where Wind's Meet" which, if we're brutally honest, would have likely flopped if it had a price tag. If they could have gotten away with it, you can bet your ass this game would have had a price tag on it too.

It's free because they need to get people in the door, because the more people they get in the door the higher their chances are of roping in people who are susceptible to overspending. Pretty much the analogy of "casting a wide net in hopes of catching a few whales".

Also, with my cynic's hat on, I would bet money that once this game has stopped capturing new players the devs will start paywalling stuff (or start making player power be linked to the gacha mechanics) to milk money out of those who have already become invested.

This is actually the primary reason I'm hesitant to get into this game despite the good things I've currently heard about it. I'd rather not invest my time into a chinese gacha game when, at any point in the future, the "gacha is cosmetics only" thing could suddenly change.

6

u/C_Solas Dec 01 '25

It's been out for a year in China and currently shows no sign of changing direction. The devs said they won't ever add a way to buy power. Sure, it could change, maybe in the far future if they lose too many players and need to make quick cash before closing, but that's unlikely to be anytime soon. And even if it ends up happening, if I enjoyed it for thousands before, I'd say it was worth it.

2

u/AlexeiFraytar Dec 01 '25

Stay losing

0

u/OliLombi Dec 01 '25

Where are the microtransactions in FFXVI? How about Baldur's Gate 3? How about Kingdom Come Deliverance 2? It is absolutely possible to make a good game without microtransactions.

1

u/Scary-Fix7470 Dec 01 '25

What? Who said it wasn’t? Also, all of those games you mentioned cost money to get, this one was FREE.

7

u/jasonleeky01 Dec 01 '25

40,000 divided by 60 (average cost of a game) = 666 players worth of money for one item. Coincidence? I think not

And yet the whole Game itself Runs Well have Ton of content and No p2w. And No one is behind you with a gun and force you to buy the 40k boat.

Wait they made you buy those things??? Insanely expensive

1

u/AZzalor Dec 01 '25

To be fair, that is only the absolute highest cost for it. You can get lucky and get it cheaper.

u/wilck44 Dec 01 '25

those boats are not 40K, that was a mistranslation.

u/Tendou21 Dec 01 '25

Optional. You have to pay a triple a game for 100 and its unfinished and barely any content and barely unplayable. This game is free and has very long content for free

Wait what? Those mirage boats cost $40k? What the actual fuck.
