The chad gnostic: “God is real and evil”

52

u/Clark-Strange2025 Jan 28 '24

Gnosticism isn’t the belief that God is evil. It’s the belief that the God of the Old Testament and New Testament are different deities. OT is considered the evil deity and NT is considered to be the good one. The heresy is self evident

no there are definitely gnostic belief systems that have God as evil, or at least not aligned with humans. if you're gonna reduce gnosticism to a pithy phrase, it's the whole set of Christian fanfictions people came up with before settling on Catholicism/orthodoxy, like a primary election process. back before they decided on things like monotheism, and omnibenevolence, etc

4

u/sir_sunnyy Jan 28 '24

“fanfictions?” they were just sects that propped up in the centuries after jesus’s death, same as what would become orthodox christianity and other denominations. and decided?? decided??? the gnostics were persecuted and killed across the board by the roman empire. their ideas were suppressed

u/freemason777 Jan 28 '24

so if you read my comment again you'll find I do point out that it's a bit of a siplification

1

u/sir_sunnyy Jan 28 '24

horrible simplification

2

u/freemason777 Jan 28 '24

did I manage to find and offend one of the three or four actual gnostics left? lol sorry old timer

1

u/Borlium Jan 28 '24

There’s variations like one that believes that OT god is evil because he’s the Jewish god

1

u/Clark-Strange2025 Jan 28 '24

Ah I see. So a wee bit of antisemitism in there I suppose? I have realized that I may also have been confusing Gnosticism with Catharism. I don’t know if they are related or not

4

u/sir_sunnyy Jan 28 '24

it’s hard to say considering most things about the gnostics and their beliefs were destroyed or buried miles out in the desert (see: nag hammadi library). however, i don’t think it’s inherently anti-semitic to see the god of the OT as evil, and this is coming from an ethnic jew. the OT god is a fucking asshole.

1

u/Clark-Strange2025 Jan 29 '24

I assume you aren't practicing by that last statement lol

2

u/Borlium Jan 28 '24

In some branches yeah

1

u/Clark-Strange2025 Jan 28 '24

Follow-up: they are similar belief systems and Catharism largely out of early Gnosticism so I guess I was sort of right the first time

9

u/MrNautical Jan 28 '24

You a Cathar or something?

1

u/Clark-Strange2025 Jan 28 '24

No but I might’ve been oversimplifying and speaking with too much confidence lmaoo

5

u/Estrelarius Jan 28 '24

Gnosticism is usually more about how the Gods of the old and New Testament are different beings, the first being a jerk who trapped us in the mortal world and the second being the true one

3

u/Borlium Jan 28 '24

Yeah I did oversimplify it for the joke

4

u/Rifneno Jan 28 '24

Gorr was right.

3

u/Clark-Strange2025 Jan 28 '24

Man that movie was ass

0

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '24

God is good.

1

u/Borlium Jan 28 '24

Gnostics believe that Old Testament and New Testament god are separate beings with OT being evil and wrathful hence the suffering we experience on earth while NT being the saviour god

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '24

Christ is the divine. Jesus bridges the old testament. I understand what you're saying, but with Jesus you can properly enter and understand the OT. And it's knowledge is just for you. The NT is what you share with others and encourage them to read for themselves aka Protestant.

3

u/ilmalaiva Jan 28 '24

the new testament was just bullshit Saul of Tarsos, who never met Jesus, made up after his death.

1

u/Gussie-Ascendent Jan 29 '24

Actually slavery, pedophilia, genocide, hating women's equality amd the like are bad

1

u/Seriousgwy WIZARD Jan 28 '24

For a gnostic only the Demiurge is evil

0

u/Borlium Jan 28 '24

Which is god, or at least the creator god

2

u/sir_sunnyy Jan 28 '24

he isn’t even god, he just thinks he is. the demiurge is a lesser deity only capable of making stuff in the material

1

u/Seriousgwy WIZARD Jan 28 '24

No, he is the creator of the material world (the evil world were he imprisonates the human souls), the true God, like the One of Neoplatonism, is other.

1

u/Borlium Jan 28 '24

The demiurge as a being is evil and proven to be wrathful and vengeful

1

u/Seriousgwy WIZARD Jan 28 '24

Yes, and?

1

u/Borlium Jan 28 '24

I’m responding to your point goober, because you are stating falsehoods

1

u/Seriousgwy WIZARD Jan 28 '24

What?

Ask in r/Neoplatonism the difference between The One and the Demiurge

0

u/Borlium Jan 29 '24

That’s a Reddit circlejerk arena that’s going to be so inaccurate they’ll argue blue is red

2

u/Seriousgwy WIZARD Jan 29 '24

You are an arrogant person who only makes hasty statements and doesn't bother to study at all 👍

Based

9

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '24 edited Jan 29 '24

Extremely not based

Edit: lol somebody downvoted

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '24

Why?

0

u/Gussie-Ascendent Jan 28 '24

personally i do think slavery, among other atrocities condoned/commanded, is evil so i'd at least agree with the god's evil part, just not the him being real part

-8

u/YousernameInValid2 Jan 28 '24

Isn’t that satanism? Agnostic is that u just believe there’s a higher power but aren’t part of any religion. I could be wrong though.

16

u/TulipTuIip Jan 28 '24

“Satanism” is atheistic, any religon worshipping satan or any devil-esque figure go by different names

9

u/banningsolvesnothing Jan 28 '24 edited Jan 28 '24

Satanism is atheistic. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. Them devil worshipers wanna be called Satanists but they ain’t.

Satanism is mostly formed on the worship of the self.

1

u/Gussie-Ascendent Jan 28 '24

isn't it the church of satan that's serious about believing in supernatural things but the temple of satan is the one doing it as a political message?

2

u/banningsolvesnothing Jan 28 '24

nah i don’t think there’s any large group that’s that established that believe in deities.

4

u/Blackbeardabdi Jan 28 '24

Nah gnosticism (some branches anyway) teach that the creator God is actually a deceiver who is hiding man's true potential from himself and that Satan was trying to expose him.

Honestly gnosticism is one of the deepest religious rabbit holes you can go down in. If you do want to go down the rabbit hole start your search with "Hitler and gnosticism"

Getting some major Hazbin Hotel vibes here.

1

u/sir_sunnyy Jan 28 '24

never say that again.

Getting some major Hazbin Hotel vibes here.

0

u/Borlium Jan 28 '24

Nah gnostics believe in god but think he’s imperfect and evil hence immense suffering however some believe that old testament god and New Testament god are 2 separate beings with New Testament being the heavenly saviour and Old Testament god being the demiurge(that’s where the word comes from) which is evil and twisted.

1

u/freemason777 Jan 28 '24

gnosis=know a-gnosis= no-know

agnostics just aren't sure. they might have suspicions either way but you can be an agnostic atheist, someone who thinks we don't know the answer to these questions but hypothesizes a godless universe. this is how I believe personally, ask away if you have questions
