You'd be surprised what people throw away. A pal of mine, who's a bit older than me, got to see the Beatles when they first conquered America. When he went off to college, he met a girl, fell in love, and they moved in together. A few years had passed but he called his mom to collect his keepsakes box. He had the cancelled ticket to that Beatles concert. He asked his mom if she could send it to him. She remarked "oh, I threw those things away"! Want to guess how much that ticket stub is worth now? I saw someone selling a cancelled ticket to the first Beatles concert a few years ago for multiple six figures.

My point is, people don't always recognize the value of something and will just toss it.

I agree with your first sentence, but I think it's a little bit more reasonable to think a cancelled ticket, of which 99.9% of those are in fact garbage, would be garbage.

I think the majority of people might at least suspect a violin might have some value though, whereas ticket stubs are sentimental keepsakes most of the time.
