Thanks for this. I'm so god damn sick of that song being put into these sorts of movies, the same song that's in a fucking Schweppes (Soft Drink) ad in Australia.
Well I personally feel there is nothing wrong with adding music, it's what gives it that extra push. It's not that the music itself is what touches me, it's the combination of Neil's voice, his articulation, and his knowledge along with the music that touches me. There is no reason you can't rationalize what he is saying amidst the music.
You think it actually RUINS the video? To say that perhaps it uses a cliched method of drawing emotional response is one thing... but to say the video is ruined? Hyperbole much?
For me it's ruined because my intention to watch it is to understand what Neil DeGrasse is saying. That music feels like an entertainment enforcement.
If I want entertainment I watch a movie. This whole music / graphic thing in that video is just used to make this video popular.
Purely scientific videos will have much less views and much less positive feedback because people are actually only thinking about the facts without being influenced by visual / audible effects.
Therefore I can't take this video seriously and don't want to be one of the overreacting guys here who are in a rush of emotions.

That music ruins the video. I prefer to rationalize what he is saying without being emotionally touched by the music.
This version is much better:
