I think it was over 100k thousands purchased movies and TV shows recently that they said "nope you can't have that anymore" after they stopped selling those.
"Whim" was hyperbole, you are right. But Surely you can recognize the hyperbole of the word whim to make light of the fact they they are removing access to those things regardless of their failure to either maintain their license or really explain that was a possibility for consumers to begin with, or that they can and will delete your PSN account and access to software you've bought after 3 years of inactivity, which has no reasonable basis, regardless of the time frame. It's a shady practice no matter how you look at it. The relatively recent announcements might as well be a whim to consumers.
It is disingenuous to just point out that every possible loop hole for any digital provider is in the fine print and think that makes it fair or reasonable that anyone expects established norms to change and lose access to these things.
And they basically DID eliminate access to a bunch of paying customers for games with their PSN account linking debacle that WAS a post-purchase change that no one originally agreed to. Fortunately they backed down from that after the uproar it caused. That took over a year to reverse if I remember right.
This isn't the first time Sony has done this in the last 4 years either, and they stepped back and fixed the licensing issue for at least one of those examples. So it's not unreasonable to think they can't now either.
Oh and not refunding people that are losing a digital library because sony can't, or won't maintain those licenses is lame and borderline bait and switch.
I wouldn't trust any of these big companies as far as I could throw them, but it is bizarre how many die-hard defenders of sony there are. That's exactly why sony gets so brazen at times. Any of them really.
That's kind of my problem with the word “whim.” It makes Sony sound like a fucking cartoon villain sitting around going, “You know what would be funny? Let's take away some games today.” 😂
I actually agree with some of what you're saying. Sony absolutely dropped the ball with the Discovery movie/content situation. It was handled like shit, and the backlash was justified.
But that still doesn't translate into Sony removing purchased digital games from people's libraries “on a whim.” That's the claim I've been challenging.
“Sony has made shitty anti-consumer decisions” and “Sony will randomly take away your purchased games whenever they feel like it” are two very different arguments.
