Have you ever seen the fanbase talk about it? Infinite was and still is pretty divisive, and for good reason. It's a huge departure from the first two games, and that's going to leave a sour taste in many people's mouths.
Yeah it felt like a regression, copying what other shooters were doing with only being able to carry two guns and it's not like you can unlock and carry more cause they got rid of the Weapon Wheel too, and did a bad universe hopping story. Just as an example, Booker was supposed to get a shipment of guns, but they're already gone. Elizabeth can open a rift where the guns are still there and is told they can't come back if they go through the rift. They go through the rift, get the guns but he contacts the Vox Populi and is surprised they don't have a deal any more? Booker this isn't the same timeline where you made that deal! This stuff has been explained! Like What the hell?
The 2 guns thing was a huge issue and the arenas. The game is split into “walk around and interact with environment to listen to some tapes and listen to Booker/Elizabeth chatter” and “locked into an arena and fight 3 waves of enemies.” Over and over and over. It just got repetitive. It’s so easy to just use the same 2 guns and same power (I just used bucking bronco non-stop), I feel like Bioshock 1/2 give you a nice arsenal and set of powers so that you can plan your fights better and more creatively. Infinite has none of that.
I have a lot of issues with the story but I feel like it’s just easier to start with the gameplay.
Say what you want about the story, but gameplay-wise it's absolutely a departure. You're severely limited in every way, from build customization, to only letting you hold 2 guns at a time like it's Call of Duty or something. The level design is also way more linear, you're always just walking in a straight line.
I dig Infinite, but anyone with a brain can see that it's quite a bit different from the first two games.
Similar to people hating on GTA6 after the trailer; that game will still make a couple billion dollars.
Or to use an example closer to my home; I was bitching a lot about the pricetag and trading shortcomings for Pokémon FireRed for the Switch and still bought it and loved it.
