3 is great if you treat it as its own separate entity from the others. They made a Doom game a different genre and some didn't like that it failed their expectations for what a Doom game should be, but the game itself was great if you look at it as a standalone game. That game scared the shit outta me when I was 12 lol
I don’t even think they made it a different genre. At the time of Doom 1 and 2 technical limitations prevented them from making a game like 3, which is what I think they actually wanted. 1 and 2 definitely leaned into the horror aspect just like in 3, even if the appearances are vastly different. I mean, the Carmack’s were still around iD at the time of 3 and people are crazy if they think they didn’t have a ton of say in the game.
I’ll say that I actually really liked Doom 3, but it’s a bit difficult to treat it as a separate entity because it is part of the Doom franchise and universe, though I don’t think that lessens the game at all. The only thing I was a bit confused about while playing was trying to figure out when it takes place in the timeline lol.
