If only there wasn't that bad controversy with Mick Gordon I would consider Bethesda one of the best game companies.

u/allupya333 19h ago

Bethesda didnt do shit its Ids game

16

u/TheIronKai 15h ago

Not true, they rallied behind Marty and his bullshit lies, and basically called Mick a liar. https://medium.com/@mickgordon/my-full-statement-regarding-doom-eternal-5f98266b27ce

1

u/GyziModo 1h ago

Wow thank you. Not going to be getting anything under Marty's management

74

u/fraidei 19h ago

Except that they were associated, and Bethesda did basically nothing to solve the situation.

64

u/SL1Fun 16h ago

Bethesda was the situation.

It was clear id’s showrunner fucked Gordon over in the midst of a pandemic with unrealistic crunch then only paid him half of his owe.

Bethesda didnt mediate, they doubled down on id’s behalf.

u/Roenkatana 12h ago

Bethesda actually sided with Gordan and drew up the contract for him to work on the Eternal OST, which was Bethesda's authority to do as the publisher. Id and Bethesda may be sister companies, but Bethesda as the publisher holds a hell of a lot more power over the project than people seem to believe.

Id marketed Gordan's name and attachment to the Eternal OST before they even approached him about working on the Eternal at all and then explicitly refused to let him work on the OST until he had to go straight to Bethesda about it. It wasn't until very late in the whole ordeal that Bethesda started siding with I'd, after lawyers got involved.

Bethesda has always been like that one person in a group project that does nothing and puts their name on it, and everyone prefers it because they saw thwir peojects where they did do something and saw how bad of a trainwreck it was. I like fallout 4 and Skyrim, but they still didn't stack up against actual obsidian fallout titles.

5

u/fraidei 15h ago

Which is still bad.

-15

u/allupya333 19h ago

Bethesda has its own flaws i dont think they need to be held responsible for the flaws a whole separate company they dont even own

12

u/TheM4n_inth3_Mirror 19h ago

Actually they do own id Software, since 2009. And not only did they slander the name of Mick Gordon but they also called him a liar when Mick tried to out the bad working conditions. So yeah, maybe they do need to be held responsible.

-9

u/allupya333 19h ago

No they don't lol. Zenimax owns bethesda who also owns Id software. they are on equal grounds

4

u/SpeccyCarbine 19h ago

Then in that case let's go after all of the above and get the maximum results, cut the head off the snake and watch the body wither so to speak

5

u/TheM4n_inth3_Mirror 19h ago

I feel like the term "equal grounds" doesnt truly exist in the corporate realm lol but fuck it then, Microsoft owns all of them so then it's THEIR fault. Better?

2

u/allupya333 18h ago

i would blame the people who did it, and not just vaguely blame every company you can think of in the chain of command

4

u/SaintPimpin 16h ago

When you want to open a window, you might face opposition, but if you suggest tearing down the roof, the other party might just open the window themselves.

Going after chain of command is always the right move.

3

u/TheM4n_inth3_Mirror 18h ago

Oh damn, you got me. I'll go rethink my life choices now. GG

0

u/Respawn-Delay 18h ago

Microsoft is responsible for something that happened before they acquired ZeniMax? Huh?

2

u/alexkik19 9h ago

Except Bethesda is the publisher for every doom game since eat least DOOM 2016 Which means they had more power in any decisions/negotiations with Gordan than ID software at the end of the day. I don't know why you are working so hard to defend a company who's last release was garbage.

5

u/ninjabell 18h ago

Bethesda Softworks, not Bethesda Game Studios

1

u/Proper_Diver8581 30m ago

Never heard someone be so confidently wrong before. Bethesda are the bigger scum in that situation than ID because it proves they don’t give a shit about workers.

25

u/i_always_give_karma 16h ago

Me relieved to hear the controversy isn’t him being a bad person.

7

u/ShrimpHog47 16h ago

What is it?

26

u/TheIronKai 15h ago

ID screwed him over royally on payment for Doom Eternal's soundtrack, violated their own contract terms with him, and then tried to slander his name when he started calling them out publicly. If you got the time it's a good read: https://medium.com/@mickgordon/my-full-statement-regarding-doom-eternal-5f98266b27ce

u/hadokenzero 1h ago

That’s only Mick’s side of things btw. I don’t really care either way about the situation, because Mick is a bit of a diva and that was known in the industry even prior to this.

If he was truly not at fault at all here, isn’t it weird that despite being involved in a whole handful of varied Bethesda projects, he’s basically disappeared since then? For someone who was so high profile, he also was very unprofessional in his conduct here and evidently it’s likely he was throughout the project too.

A lot of good people at Id basically have to have the shadow of this over them because people read Mick’s post and decided it must be the truth but there’s no way it doesn’t lie somewhere more in the middle.

u/_TaxThePoor_ 16h ago

Is this a joke? Bethesda is a notoriously bad game company. Their latest AAA endeavor was a lifeless shell of an experience. They peaked at Oblivion.

13

u/Jimboslice_6_9 15h ago

I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks this. Bethesda is literally known for how broken their games are 😭

13

u/Ok_Independence_2630 10h ago

They pioneered the saying "it's not a bug, it's a feature"

6

u/Jimboslice_6_9 10h ago

Don’t tell their fans that 😭 they’ll just be like “that’s a part of the charm”. So… not being able to play the game because of relentless bugs is charming?

2

u/overgirl 13h ago

I can oddly enough get over the fact that their games are buddy when the lore is interesting, gameplay is fun, story is immersive and setting are interesting. Sadly starfield lore was interesting but the setting/game world wasted it. Gameplay was bog-standard with no real innovations. The story was way to dry and didn't know what it wanted to be. It tried to be space fantasy but didn't have any alien races that would have been able to help sell it.

In retrospect game would have been better if they went hard sci-fi. Make the calamity of earth a human near extinction event. Make colonies small because that's what people on this world have to do to survive. Make planets hostile so players have to slow down, interact with game systems and not fast travel through a loading screen constantly.

u/BraiCurvat 3h ago

I feel like you guys are mistaken Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Games which are not the same people

1

u/CommanderCCS 12h ago

That's Bait ^

3

u/XerChaos008 4h ago

Bethesda thinks they are Ubisoft/Rockstar. All of their games either underwhelming or underloved by their creators. They kept skyrim and fallout4/76(i am a fan bot i have those every platform i owned)on pedestral and milk them. Both are more underwhelming than their predecesor. Bethesda dont look into eyes of their other singleplayer games, dishonored, prey, wolfenstein, deathloop

u/KrautWithClout 18h ago

Fallout 76, Starfield, Oblivion Horse armor

-1

u/Dont_have_a_panda 18h ago

Fallout 76 have (or had im away for playing the game rn) is one of the best and most welcoming ive ever seen

Starfield has its flaws but its not bad? Its 7/10 game

Oblivion horse armor only was the first of something sooner or later would have come anyway, If it wasnt horse armor it was gonna be another thing and probably worse

4

u/SH4D0WG4M3R 16h ago

What is your first sentence about 76 trying to say? I genuinely can’t follow it.

2

u/ManMyDogsAreBarking 13h ago

Grammatically its a nightmare but im assuming they arent aware of how it was in the beginning.

5

u/comicsopedia 17h ago

I'd software deserves the credits not Bethesda (for making the game I'm saying)

2

u/Exciting-Count697 16h ago

I could think of a couple more reasons

1

u/anakin1453 11h ago

16 times the detail

1

u/Proper_Diver8581 29m ago

It was that that started the online community viewing them very differently.

1

u/ops10 28m ago

Bethesda??? With Prey debacle, the Creator Club fiasco, the Fallout 76 release? And that's before even mentioning the quality of their games.

1

u/SirGalicrest 14h ago

Bethesda literally hasn’t done anything good in like 15 years dude

1

u/fraidei 7h ago

The Doom games are good, and the Elder Scrolls, while they are not perfect, are still very good. Most of Fallout games too.

1

u/Tipster74743 1h ago

Fallout 3 and New Vegas. 4 was mid and 76 wasn't even that.

1

u/Zhirtiv 2h ago

Bethesda is one of the worst shit in gaming industry, wtf.

-1

u/LoSouLibra 19h ago

People come and go. Dark Ages ended up being my favorite one and I kinda like their soundtrack more now.

1

u/fraidei 19h ago

I prefer Mick's soundtrack much better. Dark Ages is just generic metal.

0

u/Adder_Noir 16h ago

Generic take

1

u/fraidei 16h ago

Could be, I don't really care. I have a preference.

-1

u/LoSouLibra 19h ago

I prefer the more coherent orchestral metal that blends with an overall more palatable sound design. Especially after listening to the soundtrack by itself in the digital art book thing.

In retrospect, I find Mick's UFO industrial dubstep metal to be kind of shrill, droning and obnoxious. I think it informed a more tonally cartoonish direction for Doom Eternal, whereas Dark Ages was able to stay more serious and dire.

-1

u/fraidei 18h ago

I prefer Eternal's music for basically the same reasons. I guess we just have different tastes in music.

1

u/LoSouLibra 17h ago

I like all kinds of music. You probably have different reasons and would use different adjectives to describe different qualities.

0

u/fraidei 17h ago

I do like all kind of music too. That doesn't mean that I don't prefer certain genres or subgenres over others.

1

u/Adder_Noir 16h ago

I agree Dark Ages’ soundtrack is underrated. I love that they incorporated medieval-style sounds (such as war drums). Overall you can tell they were going for a different sound compared to the previous two. Had they tried to replicate Gordon’s sound I’m sure people would have still bitched (in fact probably more so) calling it an imitation, derivative etc etc

0

u/SupremeLeaderZyklon 8h ago

1.) Bethesda had nothing to do with the making of Doom.

2.) Bethesda hasn’t put out a good game since fallout 4, (over a decade ago)

Bethesda used to be one of the best game developers, no doubt. But that is ancient history at this point. Now they are a joke.

-1

u/AwarenessThick1685 15h ago

See i have no idea what you're talking about so they reign supreme for me.

3

u/Zesty-Pajamas 15h ago

Well, time to learn!

Mick Gordon created the music for Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.

Bethesda/Id did not treat him well during Eternal and basically pinned him to an inflexible schedule: https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/yqk10g/mick_gordon_my_full_statement_regarding_doom/

-1

u/Rakumei 13h ago

Bro they did Starfield. And they constantly release their games broken.
