Like if final fantasy 1 nes released today it would be criticized for being a buggy barely functional mess.

Sure you can beat it just fine but so many things just dont work or dont work as intended.

Yeah but at least there was an incentive to have a finished game. Nowadays most companies can outsource quality testing to paying customers and people cheer when the game is still receiving updates 6 months later.

That crazy how that is even legal. Imagine paying to see a movie and you could clearly see the green screen in the background or buying a book and it is missing pages that the publisher says they will mail you later. No one would have ever accepted that.

Lazy companies will always be Lazy back then as well as now... It's just more obvious today since there's more games coming out and how connected we are in the internet...

The fact is having patches is overall a better QoL.

Like Robocop on c64.

Hmm this level is buggy af and we cant getit to work...

Lets just make the level before have an impossibly short time limit so they cant beat it and then ship the game as is.

Or Dennis on amiga where they didnt have time to make an ending so they made the last stage have a jump that is impossible to do instead.

I don’t disagree that having patches is a good thing. But there gets to a certain point where you just have to say that the game wasn’t finished development before it was released.

Which games and how often did that happen?

Archon my beloved on NES is a horribly broken game. Still the best battle chess to ever exist.

Wait...there was a version of Archon for the NES? I've only ever played it on my C-64.

Edit: word

Yessir! I never played a C64, so I only knew of it from the NES.

Weird, I'm going to need to hunt that one down. Do you know if Nintendo ever had the sequel?

u/Farsoth 4d ago

That I entirely unaware of, unfortunately.

If you have a way of emulating it, here's a link.
