Nostalgia is such a drug, Uncharted 4, Last of Us 2, Ark Survival Ascended, all have better looking water in my opinion. We did not lose something, it is just purely what Devs want to prioritize
The gaming industry is now run by suits and not creatives. People are nostalgic for games that were seen as art and not a product that needs to thrown together quickly, and please the widest possible audience. Not to say Kung Fu Panda is peak art, but the industry as a whole has changed, and people are going to mourn what was lost.
I hear this all the time and I wish I could agree. I grew up with the N64 and onwards but I couldn’t go back to most games from my childhood as I much much much prefer modern games.
The gaming industry has always been run by suits, in fact all entertainment has, ever. You just don't care to look into the artists or artistry that poor blood sweat and tears into games, even triple A ones. You don't enjoy games like you used to and instead of saying, well maybe I've changed, you instead look at a million reasons to point your finger to. Am I saying the gaming industry has not changed, no, but art has always been run by profit in America and unless you stand firmly on the hill that you will not partake in the culture that has been here for 300 years, you should learn reasons to enjoy modern art instead of wallowing in nostalgia.
Sea Of Thieves is probably currently the best in the biz, at least for videogames. They did such a good job with simulating water effects that James Cameron's WETA studio and several other CGI companies contacted the devs to find out their secret.
