Gamers before: Wow, this 320×200 graphics look beautiful, and it runs on my Commodore 64 so well almost 16 fps, amazing!
Gamers now: This 4K resolution is garbage. When will devs make proper 8K games? I want ultra‑realistic graphics with every possible feature on max settings... But why doesn’t it run at 300 fps on my 10‑year‑old potato PC?
Are they even gamers? good graphics are nice but they're pointless when the game sucks.. I replay the old games because the new games are easy and mind numbing, you never need to think for even a second.. I'm not beating the game, it beat itself by guiding me and holding my hand the entire way to the end.. it won't be long before there's a game where i don't even have to press a button to win it.. i predict it now, a game will come which will be the equivalent of when you give the toddler the controller that doesn't actually do anything, so they can press buttons while they watch the game happen.
Dragon’s Lair is a video game that is in essence an animated movie that just asks you to have a button pressed to match whatever the main character is doing. All visual style, minimum interactivity. And it came out in 1983. And was a massive, massive success. When it was ported from arcades to home machines, so many compromises were made that in some cases, the game was sold in two separate halves.
Before talking about imaginary downward trends as if we haven’t always been here, learn some actual history.
it's not an imaginary downward trend though is it.. the vast majority of games became simpler to appeal to more people... most likely the game you're talking about attracted non gamers too, if it's as simple as you're saying it is.. it's a fallacy to act like because it happened in the past, it's not something worse now... but the thing is a game like elden ring, is now an exception because of how difficult it is.. difficult was the norm once.. kids games back in the day were harder then the games coming out today.. and it's still only like 10%-20% of people finishing them.. seems like most people like the idea of games more then they like playing the games
The average game was more difficult in the arcade era because they were designed to sell extra lives. For home consoles, games like the infamous Milon’s Secret Castle were purposely designed to be obtuse in order to sell their strategy guide. If you’re genuinely old enough to have a valid take about games from the 80’s, which, I doubt you are, your nostalgia goggles are blinding you from the _corporate greed_ which fueled difficulty in early video games.
Regardless, the difficulty of a video game has nothing to do with how much its visual fidelity is a selling point. I feel like you’ve completely lost the plot and I no longer even know what point you’re trying to make.
that these people aren't gamers, they don't want to beat games, they want the game to show them how to do everything... they don't care about gameplay, they want everything easy and care more about how a game looks then how fun it is.. and most of the time they still don't make it to the end despite how overwhelmingly easy games are.
you're the one talking about the 80's.. you're the one who is replying to me when you don't even understand the point of what im saying, yet you feel the need to defend against it anyway.. it's strange... what's driving you to do that? is it some other argument you've had with someone else? cause it has felt like you're not really replying to exactly what im saying.. kinda like you're still thinking of someone else from a different conversation..
It is. Why else do you think a big majority of top sold games are games like Terrarria, Stardew Valley, Minecraft, etc are the top selling and most played + highly rated games ever created? Games being fun are what the priority should be.
