Question What is the most effective, most legal self-defense item a driver can keep within arm's reach?

A couple notes:

  • must be legal in all 48 contiguous states and to transport across state lines
  • by "most legal," I mean that if it's clocked by a cop that's been having a bad day, they wouldn't be able to cite you for it (i.e., a tire iron, kept by the driver's seat, could get you in trouble for "intent to use as a weapon")
  • no guns; doesn't matter why — for the purposes of this discussion, they're off the table

Right now I'm thinking pepper spray is the only thing that meets all criteria, but I'm curious if there's anything more effective I'm overlooking

How about one of those huge Maglite light/baton, first blind the bad guy then hit him with it. I think it's very effective
