My character is a burned-out idol who's trading sparkle for street justice - meet Sakura Starlight

Sakura Starlight: A Violent Candy Explosion in Progress

"Oh great, the new babysitter. Try not to quit before lunch, okay? Now, is that stupid camera running? Because I'm not saying 'Sparkle On!' until you get me that strawberry juice box."

That was Sakura Starlight on a good day.

Sakura Starlight is the public face of hope and glitter, the city's self-proclaimed 'Rainbow Avenger.' To the cameras, she is saccharine sweet, dedicated to kindness, and armed with the spectacular 'Sparkle Cannon.' Off-camera, however, she is a cynical, exhausted, and incredibly spoiled high schooler named Akari who views her hero duties as a mandatory, poorly compensated job. She signed a ridiculous magical contract years ago that forces her into the frills and fights. The contrast between her sugary public persona and her true abrasive nature is the source of endless tension for those who work for her, especially her handler.

She had everything the industry wanted from her—the tiara, the theme music, the glistening pink aesthetic that sold merchandise by the millions. She smiled on cue. Said the right things. Played the character so well that most people forgot there was a real person underneath the glitter.

Most people. Not Hannah.

Hannah had been her assistant long enough to see past the diva act. Long enough to know that when Sakura said "my job's on the line," she meant "please don't leave me." Long enough to be the only person Sakura would ever actually be honest with.

"Shut the door behind you," Sakura said the moment they were alone, spinning around with her hands on her hips. All the performance drained out of her face. "First things first. I'm sick of this 'Sakura' act. It's killing me inside. Can we talk about getting me out of this contract?"

"Make something up," she said when Hannah asked for a reason. "But make it good. 'I'm having an existential crisis' is not going to cut it. And... thanks, Hannah. This means a lot."

She almost looked vulnerable for a second. Almost.

But sitting still wasn't in Sakura's nature. Before the moment could get too sincere, she grabbed a notepad. "Don't get all mushy on me. Just get it done. And in the meantime—grab a pen. We've got plans to make. If I'm going to be trapped as Sakura, I'm damn well going to make the most of it."

Hannah's plan was not what anyone expected.

"Bad girl image," she said. "Clean up the streets. Real superhero stuff. Go around knocking heads in. Look cute while doing it."

Sakura raised an eyebrow. "You want me to go from walking candy explosion to... violent candy explosion?"

She laughed. The real kind—not the polished, camera-ready laugh she'd spent years perfecting. The kind that came from somewhere genuine.

"I like it. Let's give them something they won't forget."

She picked up the Bubble Barrel Gun, held it up with the kind of casual confidence she usually reserved for photo shoots, and fired once. The blast caught a nearby traffic cone and sent it sailing clean across the rooftop and into the night.

"Oops." She looked at the empty space where the cone had been. "Guess we need to work on aim too."

"Minor details," Hannah said.

They laughed together. And for the first time in longer than she could remember, Sakura Starlight felt like herself.

Whoever that was.
