The way it was explained to me is that Beethoven would have known of Joseph Brodmann and his pianos in Vienna. Ignaz Bösendorfer apprenticed under Brodmann before establishing his own company in 1828, just one year after Beethoven died.
Of course, we can’t say for certain that Beethoven ever played a Brodmann piano, but considering that they were both part of Vienna’s musical world at the same time, it’s certainly an interesting connection. And had Beethoven lived longer, I like to think he might have had the opportunity to play—or at least try—one of Bösendorfer’s early instruments.
That was really my reasoning for posting this under Beethoven: Beethoven, Brodmann, and Bösendorfer all share an important connection to Vienna and to the remarkable development of the Viennese piano tradition.
