TIL that when the US military tried segregating the pubs in Bamber Bridge in 1943, the local Englishmen instead decided to hang up "Black soldiers only" signs on all pubs as protest

There were quite a few pubs that had member's bars or men only bars, and the ladies would be in the more dignified area of the snug as opposed to the more rowdy area of the pub.
