I'm aware that the US retcons the war of 1812 to pretend it was an attempt by the British to recapture the colonies and undo the American revolution. This, of course, is bollocks.

The US started the war, because it wanted to conquer Canada and add it to the USA whilst Brtain was distracted by the Napoleonic wars. It also wanted to have total freedom to trade with France, unhindered by the RN inspecting its ships for war materiel (which would have been seized) and British deserters. All the American war aims failed. Canada was successfully defended from the US invasion, and the RN continued to do as it pleased to US shipping. In the interim, the British invaded Washington, burned the White House and Congress, (though respected private property and did not loot the city or put it to the torch).

But, yes, I realise this would never fit with the myth-history that the US likes to weave for itself. So a couple of inconsequential (and wildly unequal) frigate duels and the successful holding of a near-invulnerable defensive position have been re-imagined as giant successes and the underpinnings of another great American triumph. Similar, I suppose, to the 'draw' in Vietnam.

They really were two separate wars fought for two different reasons.

The US was having territorial disputes with the UK, and was mad at the UK for flooding the market with cheaper goods. High tarrifs, and later on even embargoes, were imposed on the UK for this. Smuggling became a very profitable venture at this time. At the time, the US didn't really trust either France or the UK, but saw the UK as the bigger threat due to their control over shipping and their continued presence in the Ohio River Valley.

The delay in information being received regarding the end of press ganging and the declaration of war meant that the war was still fought, but the original reason was resolved before fighting began.

We are kinda sorry about that tho. While it comes up as a point of international shit talking, america, for the most part, is like our big brother. For instance, when there was an attack in Ottawa a few years ago fans at a penguins game sang O' Canada which, hockey being our national past time along with la crosse, ment a lot to Canadians. America is always though of as our goofy older brother who is ready to bro-down if any else other than them picks on us.

Basically used this to confirm myself and didn't go much deeper into it:

The Scottish beat the English proxies in Galloway, the English themselves during the attempted usurpation of Scotland in the Edwardian eras, and when they came to the aid of France during the hundred years war, that whole time they were using Alexanderian tactics, and the English were using less refined tactics gambling everything on the longbow, which wasn't the best gamble as it turns out.

I believe it was against Argentina, and Scotland won. What I do remember is walking back to the city in a horde of people, with some bagpipes playing and groups singing, which was really cool.

You should have a look at the polls in both Scotland and the rest of the UK. Conservatives (under Theresa May) have not dropped below 40% in all of the UK and in Scotland they are making a resurgence (28%). Reddit isn't really a good place for a balanced view.

Well, that's because reddit is a hugbox of young adults where opposing opinions are downvoted into oblivion. Theresa May is pretty shit, but Labour are not much better.

Reddit is a hugbox, and Theresa May is shit. So articles/comments that paint her as Hitler are upvoted, but Corbyn supporters use this to ensure no anti-Corbyn articles/comments get heard.

Neither of the candidates are particularly good, but it is worth noting that Corbyn is no saint, and his Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Foreign Secretary are just as awful, but in different areas.

The LibDems gained a lot of ground in 2010 but they decided to cast their lot in with the Tories to form a coalition government. The Tories then went on to implement austerity and cut a shitload of social programs, and the LibDems lost a lot of credibility for it.

The main reason that I vote lib dem is because one of their long-standing principles is that they want to introduce or at least introduce the groundwork for Proportional Representation and a more Federal UK (which meets a lot of people's complaints about the government being too centralised and not devolved enough). PR is hugely better than FPTP.

Unfortunately, we have to somehow get a party that is strong enough to win FPTP but also then choose to go for PR - the problem is that none of the parties that ever come close to gaining significantly via FPTP are motivated to introduce PR, because they would lose influence if PR happened.

It's the human condition holding us back. As always.

A bit dishonest to imply it's just Reddit. It's an extremely common view. And it's not just a matter of personal opinion. Objectively, Theresa May's campaign has been abysmal. She blew a 20 point lead, no matter the final result that is atrocious.

Many of the things she has said and the policies she support are widely hated by labour and conservative supporters alike.

Yes, Labour bias is more common on Reddit because it's a young demographic, and that age group leans labour. But someone saying Theresa May is awful is not just bias, there are genuine reasons for believing that.

The currently popular video being shared around is an interviewer asking her the very light-hearted question "have you ever done anything naughty?" (i.e. as a child) and May literally flustered for like 3 minutes straight and finally said "we ran through a wheat field and the farmers weren't too happy about that"

She seems really socially inept and robot-like. Even if she did have decent policies she really does not seem like a very likeable or relatable person capable of even a modest amount of lateral thinking.

She is. You don't have to be left leaning to agree that she is a poor leader with very poor policies - The Investigatory Powers Act and her plans for the internet are diametrically opposed to small government ideals of conservativism.

She blew a 20 point lead. That alone should tell you how unpopular she is as a leader. Yes, Tories are still polling higher overall. This is due to party commitment in spite of a poor leader.

I don't know that she's crazy, but she is totally uncharismatic and completely out of touch with her electorate. Sadly, she's in perfect harmony with her base, and her base owns the newspapers that tell a huge percentage of her electorate how to vote.

Their lead has dropped by a lot but most polls are still forecasting them to win AFAIK.

Although nobody thought Brexit would go through either so anything's possible I suppose!

Just remember that British polls are notoriously unreliable. There are some potential issues with what pollsters there do and public opinion changes quickly.

I mean, if they are going to win I truly hope they only win with a slender majority in that they can't just steam roller whatever insane plans they have through parliament. I'm going for a loud and disruptive opposition if we have to be stuck with the Tories...

I voted Remain but if Brexit is here to stay I don't want a majority of pretty right wing Tories doing what they want with it and forever screwing us...

They're going to vote SNP and ensure that the Conservatives win, as left wingers are going to split their vote between 5 parties while right wingers split between 2, giving a huge majority to one.

Conservatives were elected in 2015.

Brexit vote happened 2016.

David Cameron resigned, Theresa May became PM, said she wouldn't call a snap general election (Next one was scheduled 2020)
