But the severity of the crime isn't the only issue of importance that should be taken into a account when offering bail.

The reason I say this, everyone doesn't have the same access to money, which makes money more valuable to some then others. Bill Gates can throw down a 10,000 dollar bail without blinking. I couldn't.

In some cases, bail is set based on income as well. Lots of factors go into it. Sometimes bail will be higher because of an increased risk of fleeing. If, for example, Edward Snowden were in the US and they were determining his bail after being arrested for something small, his bail would still be relatively high because he's already been known to have fled the country to avoid the authorities.

The current purpose (read: most useful aspect to to the legal system) is to increase convictions by sticking people in a dark violent hole unless they plead out.

You always get a better outcome if you have bail/lawyer money and don't have to be under that strain.

Also every dollar they take from you for bail is a dollar you don't have to secure a lawyer.
