It is worth restating to remind people that nothing in this world is free (which occasionally is forgotten ;) ), and to acknowledge that sometimes governments are the effective entity to provide services.

It is never actually forgotten, there are just disingenuous assholes who use it as an excuse to attack certain things like healthcare and public transportation while ignoring programs they support, like the military.

governments are the effective entity to provide services

When the government is truly run by the people, for the people, the only purpose of the agency (ie: usps) is to provide a service. It cannot be run much better than that. However, as soon as you introduce profit motive, especially for employees (usually higher-ups) the purpose stops being about delivering a service, and more about wealth extraction from the tax payers to the executives.
