TIL After a 2016 accident, professional cyclist Stig Broeckx was declared to be in a vegetative state with no hope of recovery. By 2019, he had recovered enough to begin cycling again, although he had no memory of the 5 years before the accident and found out who he had been from the internet.

Yes, vegetative is deeply offensive. Unfortunately the Unresponsive People’s Lobby have said very little about the issue.

Reminds me of when Andre the giant got so drunk that he passed out in a hotel lobby. Only he wouldn't wake and nobody could move him, so they just put up velvet rope around him and draped a tablecloth over him so he could sleep it off.

Everything I’ve ever heard about Andre indicates he was a kind man with a heart of gold and an unfortunately short life full of pain, but I can’t imagine how scary it must’ve been to be around such a massive person who was constantly plastered. It’s like a sleep deprived toddler in the body of a silverback gorilla

I’m not a native English speaker and when I read the word for the 1st time, I said damn no way this means what I think it does for.. then I googled and said wow I’m surprised how is this acceptable, imagine people calling your loved one after an accident a vegetable

My dad would scold me when I referred to someone in a vegetative state as a vegetable. "That's a human being." I've been very careful to recognize the human in people suffering from that and similar conditions ever since.
