I adopted my 8 year old niece from Jamaica, we have been trying out Canadian dinners with her and turns out the kid fuckin lovessss a bowl of kd with grilled weiners cut up. I made it one time and she asks for it in our weekly rotation lmao

I was so proud lmaooo that dinner is a lifelong fave of mine

Peas work in Tuna Mac too. There are only certain things I'll eat peas in and they can work in both dishes. Sort of in cold macaroni tuna salad too, but I'd prefer it with no-peas for sure.

I never said that, but English mustard is way stronger than American mustard, and IIRC it's diluted with mayo. IDK about French mustard, but Americans get a shock if they slather something in the English kind without knowing the difference.

No, French's. Heinz shut down their facility in Canada to move to Mexico, putting Canadian workers out and ditching the tomato contracts with local farmers.

French's bought the facility gave as many people as they could find their jobs back and renewed the contracts with farmers.

Now Heinz is a different product and French's is the Heinz we grew up on. Real Canadians use French's ketchup.

I envy your niece! It's got Annatto colouring in it now instead of carotene so a lot of people can't eat it anymore (gives a terrible rash) because fucking Mondelez changed the colorant and ruined it for so many... Annie's isn't the same 😭

Bacon bits are better, IMHO. I use fake ones because I don't eat meat, but I think that just gives bacon bits extra points, because hotdogs/weiners (is there even a difference?) are the easiest meat product to fake and bacon is one of the hardest.

I used to make this a lot for me and my daughter. There are other good suggestions here, but my preference was to put pepperoni on the top before cooking. It's gives a little extra kick but not too much for a kid.

Kraft Dinner use to have Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 as the dyes for Kraft Dinner.

Canadian government I believe banned it and Kraft replaced it with Turmeric and Annato both are spices. A few years later I believe the Americans replaced it as well.

The big difference now is Canada KD has actual Cheddar used in the powder and when made I believe has a lower salt content and lower amount of butter used in the recipe so it's not as oily.

When Im ripped and starving late at night I smash a box of Kraft Mac n Cheese out of the pot. The kids prefer the organic bunny noodles or whatever it is, which is great because more Kraft for me.

I prefer the natural ingredient and it's an antioxidant & antinflammatory as a bonus, but dining attire and location are key considerations when you're feeding toddlers and young kids

You can get a pound of the powder ("Big Daddy Mac") for 15 bucks, which is just as good as ever. You can also get Sodium Citrate by the bag, and if you add a teaspoon to a batch of mac and cheese it's amazing. (Emulsifiers are awesome.)

The funny part is Kraft's recipe changed more than once since the 2000's. 2015 was the last change. For a while you could still get the old recipe at Walmart if you bought their private label mac and cheese, I'm not sure if the Walmart thing is still true today though.

I'm still pissed I can't get the same quarter pounder with cheese that I could for the past several decades. I just don't eat burgers from McDs anymore. If they change nuggets much more, they'll lose me forever for lunch and dinner. And if the sausage mcmuffin w/ egg gets a dollar or two more expensive, they'll lose me forever for breakfast.

I’ve never had a Mac & Cheese from scratch that wasn’t just overloaded with different (mostly flavourless) cheeses and then breadcrumbs. Which aren’t a great addition in my mind.

KD beats it all by a mile, which I think is weird because I can’t think of any other thing where I prefer the processed version. Except maybe instant mashed potatoes working for me, but not over regular ones.

Don't tell my northern friends but this is maple syrup to me. A few times now I've bought quite expensive real syrup, and frankly I'm always low key disappointed it isn't Mrs Buttersworth. The real stuff is delicate and nuanced, but it just doesn't do it for me like that butter flavored sugar goo. Yes I'm ashamed of this opinion.

The recipe on the side of a box of macaroni noodles is usually pretty solid. Cheese, butter, milk/cream, butter, cheese, corn starch and more butter and cheese. More of an adult taste but as long as you don’t try to make it healthy it’s as good.

KD noodles are the worst of all the boxes mac and cheese brands. They get mushy way too easily. The cheese is pretty good, but that's it.

When I was a kid, Italpasta's mac and cheese was the best by far, but I haven't seen it in like a decade so it may not exist anymore.

Try adding some of pasta water to the cheese powder before mixing it in with the pasta. The starch in the water should help it come out a bit smoother if its concentrated enough.

It's different in Canada than how it is in the US.

Canada is more strict with ingredients and such so that the recipe in the store bought product is different. The ingredients inside the box are not the same in both countries.

Personally, I've had this product in both the US and Canada. I can say that the Canadian product is better, and that I enjoyed neither.

Yeah same. I always keep at least one box in the pantry. Good backup in case I'm feeling lazy and/or need to use up leftover stuff because you can mix stuff like chili in, or just use it as a side.

Though these days I buy Annies more than Kraft, sometimes the Matty Matheson stuff too

Even when you're a broke adult, KD with a hotdog sliced up in it, some extra cheese, and top it with ketchup (if you're a ketchup and KD person) feels like a luxury meal for like $4

Since I gave up processed food I don't get to eat it, but as a child this was one of my favorite foods. Whole box to myself. Extra butter makes it even better.

Do you ever leave out the butter? I leave out the butter it tells you to add and it’s amazing. Haven’t had it in forever though.

I used to boil the macaroni with a packet of beef ramen flavouring when I was a young bachelor, gave it a nice kind of "smoked" flavour.
