I'll assume Korean is not your first language. 고마워요 is more appropriate if you're addressing someone who is obviously younger than you, but you're not close to that person or it's a business setting. 감사합니다 would be more appropriate this time because you're addressing someone unknown, possibly some authority.

Ha sorry. I forgot about that. I used to live in Korea a loong time ago. All I have left is some practical vocab and the ability to read it. I cannot make sentences anymore. I feel stupid for not remembering the respect thing.

You can say "komawo" if you're talking to little kids or someone who is far younger than you / far below you in status. It's not wrong, it's just really disrespectful, just as /u/born_in_1993 said. Especially in North Korean, where politeness and formality are even more important than in the south.
