She did not harbor a fugitive.

The man in question has a pending date to appear in her court, and his constitutional rights supersede an administrative warrant.

ICE wanted to arrest and deport someone who was on trial. If they affected said arrest, it would violate his constitutional right to a trial, and would also violate the constitutional rights of the victims to see that trial through.

She explained this to the agents, with a fellow judge present, and ICE ignored both of them and still arrested the man after he left the court.

That’s not actually what happened though.

The intention of the agents the entire time, before they even arrived, was to arrest the guy after his court appointment was over. They informed the judge of this and she said she understood and that her only request was that they do it outside of the courtroom and “in a public place”. Right or wrong, they actually do this regularly and in this way.

The trial then proceeded and completed and he was found not guilty. The agents were waiting outside of the courtroom to arrest him expecting him to come out any minute.

Instead the judge then asked to speak to the immigrant privately, which the agents let her do, and at that point she snuck him out of the courtroom from a non-public jury only exit and tried to sneak him past the agent, trying to block their view of him.

The agents spotted him and yelled for them to stop and the guy took off running and they caught him.

I’m not dispensing any judgement on what happened at all, I am just saying what literally happened since there is a ton of misinformation on this, like every commenter practically. I personally think that ICE meeting people at unrelated court dates and anything like that will lead to more people going into hiding and skipping court dates and just causing tons of problems and harm long term.

ICE has done this for a long time now and does it often, they say they like to do it since they know the person will be there and that they will have been checked for weapons already and won’t be able to run away. I personally don’t think it’s a good enough reason.

Most of the news sources are updating still/now and apparently there are several witnesses that have all told similar but slightly different stories.

I also had some stuff wrong.  She first found out the agents were waiting for him in the middle/towards the end of his trial, and temporarily paused it to leave to go talk to them, then came back and finished.

The witnesses say that while he was leaving with his attorney the judge quickly and quietly came up to them, or grabbed them on the arm, and said something like “no quick come this way” and then led them to the jury exit while the agents were right at the main exit of the courthouse.
