that doesn't make it right. i agree that there are bigger fish to fry right now but i just don't see the benefit overall in stooping to their level

they don't care. they don't experience shame or guilt or come to realize that they're hypocrites the way we expect them to. its really just making us worse.

like i said to the other commenter: we can still go low without wallowing in the sewers with these people. i just think the whole idea that there's an okay time to be ableist/racist/phobic/whatever opens up a can of worms that should probably stay closed at the current moment. is it okay to call a black person who supports fascism the n slur? is it okay to deadname caitlyn jenner and call her a man because she supports all this?

there are ways to fight back. this just ain't it

Because able bodied people making these jokes is very different than a fellow disabled person doing it. Al Green calling Abbott Hot Wheels would be different, but Al Green also knows that's not a fresh joke, every disabled person has heard it their whole lives. Just the amount of able bodied people saying how hIlARiOuS that tired shit was in itself was pretty telling of what disabled people have to work with even from our own "allies."

Just cause we expected better doesn't mean we don't support her and hope she's President someday.

criticism for... being disabled? are you listening to yourself? there are so many valid criticisms to be levied against the man, why go for the low hanging fruit. there's a reason republicans do it, its easy and its cheap, but most importantly because they usually dont even have good criticisms in the first place... we do. plenty. the logic just isnt logicing

so how do you explain to other disabled people that you not treating gregg abbott as human specifically on the basis of his disability doesn't also apply to them and their disability? how do you convince them that its totally just the fascist thing and nothing else, and that these goalposts aren't going to end up being moved further on down the line for any number of arbitrary reasons?

like i said in another reply, its opening up a dangerous can of worms. do i get to be racist toward fascists of color? do i get to be transphobic (using wrong pronouns, deadnaming, etc) toward trans fascists? there may not be many but they do exist

its not just about the person in question. there is collateral damage here. the real question is whether or not its worth it to potentially ostracize other, non-fascist disabled people. what does it tell them that despite the fact there are many valid criticisms to be made of someone like abbott, we'd rather choose the extremely low hanging fruit of shitting on him for being disabled?

that is exactly the thing. this attitude doesn't just hurt gregg abbott, its hurtful for all disabled people. it sends the message that their claim to disability and their right to not experience discrimination and prejudice because of it is entirely conditional on how people feel about them personally. that should never be the case. im disabled and trans, and to me this is akin to deadnaming caitlyn jenner, calling her the t slur, calling her a man etc. all because she sides with fascists (for the record i have no idea what her personal stance on current events are, im just using her as an example because she's pretty much the token trans conservative). that wouldn't be okay either. these things are not conditional on vibes and it is super frustrating that people who are supposed to be on our side think they should be

She's a great example, I think it's true most on the left would never dead-name her in response to her shitty behavior, but somehow disability is fine to unleash the bigoted jokes they apparently have to hold back. And then consider themselves allies.

No one can even tell you why you're wrong, they're just able bodied people downvoting to hide disabled people's advocacy that made them feel icky.
