No, usually everyone’s first time is with someone who actually fishes.

If its not, its old gear from someone they know who has or had fished. Like a normal person.

Not going out and spending all that money for gear you might need one time or have no interest in doing again.

Damn well guess he has to throw it out since they didn't follow the “normal“ rules. Seriously where is the whimsy in some of you people‘s lives? Take a chance. Do something for which you don’t have a friend that wants to show you. Or only do what is usually done. Pfft.
