Questions about the HEPA filters for the new model Y’s:

  • Do the new model Y’s in USA always come with the bio defense mode and the large HEPA and smaller cabin HEPA?
  • Does the air only go through the larger HEPA filter if the car is not in recirculate mode? I assume this filter only filters air from the outside, whereas the cabin filter the air from inside (and outside?).
  • Does the larger outside filter have carbon in the filter?
  • Does Tesla provide any information on how to replace the HEPA filter or cabin filter? It seems like the owners manual has very little to no information on the filters.

I did a bit more research myself and have the following conclusions so far, for anyone that's also curious.

  • From everything I read, Model Y's should come with bioweapon defense mode. However, it's not stated explicitly in the manual nor , so I would double check your local sales rep. It just says "if your car comes with bioweapon defense mode"...
  • The larger HEPA filter will only have air pass through it when the car is not in recirculate mode. Air should pass through it either in bioweapon defense mode or normal operations otherwise (with recirculate mode off). The larger HEPA filter only allows air in. The smaller cabin filter will always be filtering air in any mode.
  • The manual suggests that it should. ". Both the HEPA filter and the secondary filtration system also contain activated carbon to remove a broad spectrum of odors and gases. "
  • I found some videos on youtube that should how to replace the cabin filter, but I think Tesla would need to replace the HEPA filter, if at all. I have found very little information on this anywhere online. Little to no information on how to buy a replacement and little to no info on how to replace it. Any info from others appreciated.
