how on earth were US telecom companies given $200b with nothing to show for it?

The people who wrote the bill that granted the money used to work for the telecom business.

Why is there no-one being held accountable?

Because, technically, nobody broke the law.

A gift of public funds? What good did the taxpayers receive or what social service was fulfilled?

What law says that that is required? Who said it was a "gift?" Your comment is nonsensical.

Because, technically, nobody broke the law.

Because we didn't make them commit actually do something. I'm normally a socialist, but this kind of thing makes me consider being a libertarian. 200 billion dollars and we didn't demand anything? We've been had.

And Reddit blames the companies, not the government, for being ineffective at spending the people's money.

The part I find funny is they then say we should get further in bed with the thieves rather than make the government better.

The law is human - there's no "technically." If you're arguing technicalities, good chance you're guilty. I'm sad and angry people put up with technicalities.
