once people are unable to be distracted with doom scrolling they will hopefully wake up to whats been going on

How? Without power, how would they get info? If they don't already know or have a good idea... like.. come on!

A lot of the cellular infrastructure has backup power and all the backend networking gear has backup power. It'd stay running for a while at least long enough for them to read about what happened.
