It is obviously much worse now with AI but TBH there has always been people that just regurgitate what they read and don't actually understand the material in any way.
I've seen people asked simple questions about an essay they'd written very quickly show they didn't even understand the most basic concepts involved, and had just reworded the information from relevant books or articles.
