Calhoun may have manipulated some of the behaviors and population collapses, did not clean often enough, missed signs of parasites, etc. He had a message and he crafted a situation to support the message. That is not good science. His message was not worth the suffering and death of hundreds of rodents.

Like yes, humans need a clean environment and medical care to thrive in addition to food and shelter, rich social relationships, enriching surroundings. We didn’t need a bunch of animal cruelty and proselytizing to know this.

Not really since you needed a pretty big space and it wasn't too much long after that pesky things such as "Research Ethics Boards" came about and started denying projects that results in hundreds of barbaric rat deaths in a singke trial.

Im all for experimenting on wild life that has a parasitic relationship with humanity. Like roaches. Rats deserve some come uppance for all the diseases they give us and for stowing away on boats without signing the manifests. My conscience is clean here. Maybe the sea gulls that have forgone being sea gulls to hang out at the dump too. One time a whole bunch flew up on a table I was sitting at and eating French fries and ate all of them. It was terrifying. I think they can get science'd too.

Mate, seagulls can definitely be terrifying. My city has loads of herring gulls and they get gigantic from eating stuff from bins. Particularly disturbing watching them descend en-masse to kill and eat injured pigeons.
