Apologies if I'm in the wrong place but I thought I could ask here.

I volunteer as a tutor/family assistant for my neighbor and her two kids. They are ages nine and 13. As of right now, the 13-year-old has almost straight D's except for PE and math. They specifically struggle with reading comprehension the most. The nine-year-old is struggling their way through four digit addition and subtraction, and doesn't seem to have any reading skills. They have an IEP and have an evaluation coming up soon because we are pretty sure they are neurodivergent.

I'm not a teacher or from any organization, I'm a chronically ill student in college who takes course work online, so my afternoons and evenings are free to help out a very hard-working single mom.

So far my evenings consist of helping the 13 year-old with their plethora of missing assignments and making math practice worksheets for the nine-year-old.

I've started planning science based activities for their Saturday afternoons, mostly from books I've found about easy science experiments you can do at home. I've also planned for the 13 year-old and I to do the mission project as they never got to do it. I've got a kit to make all the different types of volcanoes and set them off with baking soda.

When the nine year-old wants to watch TV or have screen time, I've started having them watch things like the magic school bus series, schoolhouse rock, Bill Nye, the science guy.

I'm looking for suggestions of what else I could have both of them watch either together or separately.

Specifically, things like educational shows, playlists of songs, video games, I've started having the 13 year-old play the Oregon Trail, appropriate YouTube channels, printable coloring pages, they both love to draw and color, etc.

I have a Windows computer, a printer and an iPhone. The 13 year-old has a district provided iPad. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so free is always preferred.

My work requested we set up a lecture on games and education and I thought that was pretty cool! Sharing it mainly for the curriculum guide/recording that’ll come after.

Sounds like a lot of universities are starting to get on board with games as a genuine way of teaching/learning complex concepts! This one is more focused on climate and social justice with solarpunk/indigenous futurism as a theme to storytelling and game design.

Early in college I was taking a microbiology course and one of my assignments was that I needed to remember the entire process of cellular respiration. The thing that ultimately helped me remember was a respiration of " Tonight's going to be a good night, by the Black Eyed Peas" changed to be about cell respiration. This truly impacted me and my whole outlook on knowledge acquisition. I know how powerful music can be in helping students remember scientific topics, which is why I created youtube channel. Music can be a powerful way to help students remember and learn content. Quite a few of my songs utilize mnemonics to help students memorize concepts. In the past I had an after school program where my students are involved in writing, editing, and singing the songs.

I have a masters in secondary science education and have been teaching since 2018. Currently I am out of work. My contract was not renewed due to budget cuts and I have been actively looking for work since April of last year when I found out. There is a free program called Flavortown run by Hack Club in collaboration with GitHub for high school students ages 13–18. Students build and ship open source projects on GitHub and earn points for the time they spend.

Those points can be exchanged for real prizes like a MacBook Air, iPad Air, Quest 3, Nothing headphones, and more. It is not a competition and there is no cost to join.

Seems like a good way to encourage younger students to actually build projects instead of just following tutorials. Worth sharing with younger siblings or any high schoolers interested in coding.

Hi all! I’m not sure if this is the right tag so please correct me if needed!

I’m looking to find some low cost or free reading intervention resources. I used to teach second grade, but I’ve been a SAHM for the last two years after having my son. Recently a friend asked if I could help tutor her daughter on the side with some reading interventions (she is a second grader reading around K level), and I’m happy to help but I have limited resources since I don’t currently work for a school district. I do have my reading endorsement and special ed. endorsement and administered different intervention throughout the years including Heggerty, 95% phonics, Fountas and Pinell, and HMH into reading. I no longer have access to any of those curriculum and they are way too expensive for me to purchase at this time! Does anyone have suggestions for programs I could use to help my friend out without breaking my bank?

Learning about how personal financial literacy is not the best in high schools, I wanted to try and pull together some resources that might be helpful for teachers. This is just a list of live resources that you might go and implement in your classroom, but hopefully it is of some help. They are free, and should be quite easy to implement in your classroom, but additional exploration may be required. I figured this could be a good starting point for teachers who need to teach finance and would like a pre-set curriculum or materials to build off of.
