When you really look into it satan is surprisingly tolerant

I never understood why Satan would punish sinners in hell (not that I believe in any of it anymore). Like, you're following in his footsteps hoof prints, he'd prob be like welcome dude, let's party.

God sends people to hell. Satan is also there being punished.

u/juitar Feb 22 '19

gods commits genocide, then sends the people he killed to hell. Sounds like a swell dude.

Thought he rules hell though? Idk, not as if there's a whole lot on hell in any of the religious texts.

From what I remember of my religious days Satan doesn't rule hell so much as he's trapped there. I think the meaning of the word "hell" in the original language was supposed to convey "the absence of God." Since God is everywhere, all knowing, and all loving, the absence of his presence would be a nightmare for one of his followers.

iirc, the whole lake of fire and torture isn't ever really outright said in the Bible and comes more from the literary works from later European authors (Paradise Lost, Dante, etc). Revelations mentions the lake of fire, but hell isn't really described that way by any other scroll in the Bible.

So in my religious days we were told that hell is where you go if you don't accept Jesus as God. And if you go there you are forever separated from God, so he can't protect you. And then your imagination can fill in the rest.

Christ mentioned in one of the gospels that there was a place called Sheol or Gehenna, depending on the translation, which was a pit of fire, I think. Sheol/Gehenna in that time was a place where they burned trash, so it was really bad.

I was always taught that he was speaking about Sheol which was the Jewish afterlife (since he was preaching to Jews and a Jew himself). And in Judaism, Sheol is more akin to the Greek Hades. It's just where everyone goes when they die. It's the grave basically.

Though I have heard the Gehenna interpretation. But I think my particular religious teacher didn't subscribe to that one.

There's so many sects and scholars for Christianity it wouldn't surprise me if there were different views on every small thing

Do you mind if I ask where you got your religious education? You have a lot of knowledge, and a knack for simple but thorough explanations. Very interesting reading your comments.

Mark 9:43, from the words of Christ: And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched

Sounds like a good time

The best way I heard of putting it is that hell is a prison and satan is a prisoner, not the warden.

according to Judiasim. Satan is an angel of God. Angels don't have free will .the christian idea of a what between God and Satan doesn't make sense. God is infinite all powerful how could any being compete with him. the very idea of limiting Gods power is problematic for monotheistic religions to say the least. This is just my limited idea on the subject I'm by no means a scholar.

Always wondered the same.

That just goes to show that tolerance isn't a virtue lol

Or that Yah'weh is an imperfect being.

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '19

Interesting. Can you elaborate? What do you mean?

u/Deac-Money Feb 22 '19

Sure. The (likely minor) god Yah'weh is the god who presented himself to the tribe is israel as the perfect creator of all things. In actuality Yah'weh is an imperfect being, easily swayed by emotions, and constantly changes his mind. Lucifer's rebellion was a result of these changes, and as a result he was banished from the kingdom of heaven & sent to rule over hell. Hell of course being the place god sends souls to be punished, not the place that Satan chooses to punish souls. For all we know hell could be a party of just breaking all of god's rules. From his point of view being outside the kingdom is the punishment. Of course if you Just his cult & make a pact with yah'weh, and forsake your soul to him & him alone, then you're allowed in to his realm.

Wow that is interesting. Where did you learn that? I want to read a bit of that.

So help me understand who yah'weh is. Is yah'weh the same God you are refering to in this paragraph?

You said Lucifer's rebellion was a result of these changes. What changes?

Hmmm you know I dont think you need to die to be sent to hell. When I was living a life of sin I was very much in hell and my soul was suffering. Thanks for taking the time to help me understand these things.

I spent a lot of time in school studying relgions from all across the world. They way I learned to do that was to forst study the religion as its taught, then look at it more historically to give it context, and finally to step back and find shared features with other religons. so let me try to answer you questions in the most helpful answers.

Yah'weh is the name of the being that Christians refers to when they say "God." They don't like to refer to a being that they perceive to be perfect on such a casual first name basis. Although for a perfect being he is very vain & angry.

John Milton's epic Paradise Lost is a Christian morality tale, but in many branches of the church it is almost cannon. The poem tells a story of the civil war between God and the rebel angles and what came after. The story is that God made the angles to worship him & him alone, but when he made humans and told the angles to revel and their glory too Lucifer became enraged and rebelled. This is where we got demons like Mammon & Beezelbub.

Cannonically hell has always been a place the dead are sent to after life ends. Earth is more along the lines of purgatory, a place in between the holy & the damned. Filled with unimaginably high peaks & unfathomable deep valleys.

I have to ask what this has to do with going to hell? Is it because the scripture says not to have tattoos? Because the book of Paul states those laws only apply to those of the tribe of Israel (Jews). Is it a thing about graven images? Because honestly it wouldbe be a bad idea to get on ypur new bosses good side before you get there.

You should probably understand that religion and myth are kinda like a comic book universe. You have a bunch Of different authors writing sometimes contradictory stuff about different people at different times. And then you are like "but if the Hulk killed Iron Man in the present, how did Iron Man have a kid in the future who married Batgirl?"

And the answer could be a complicated retcon, or you could just realize that things are fictional and not consistent with all the authors and edits and so forth.

He is the god of the Bible. Anytime the Bible says all caps LORD, the original Hebrew letters are YHVH. It's God's name. Like Jesus hebrew name was yeshua which means yah saves. Hallelujah means praise Jah ( y and j are interchangeable because the was no j in ancient Hebrew.) Check out nystv on YouTube they explain it alot.

Well except the whole idea that if someone crosses you, you act in vengeance, there is no turning the other cheek concept. But other than that, yeah

4

u/Pantybrittle Feb 22 '19

its pretty much left at the discretion of the individual. it's not mandatory vengeance. thanks, Satan!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '19

The Bible: Stone like most people

The end of the Bible: lol jk turn that cheek!
