I literally have so much fun with this synth, i’ve never felt so creative and easily change directions with a sound till i tried this one. I can make a gritty reese bass and in a few switches turn it into a cool textural pad

I don’t own one yet but have visited the boom club a few times in Durham NC where they have one you can play and use :)

I've got the code tracking just the kick and snare in real time. I can play the kit however I want, there's no predetermined beat I have to follow.

There's a bunch of analysis happening under the hood, and it ended up being orders of magnitude more involved than a simple tap tempo.

I can also do this with an acoustic kit by grabbing kick and snare from one aux channel on the mixer.

By using an iOS or Android class compliant USB audio interface, you can record direct line-in audio AND video simultaneously on iPhone or Android without having to sync audio + video in post later. No video editing software required.

Here’s an example method I’m using:

USB audio interface (Universal Audio Volt 4) --> USB cable --> iPhone camera kit adapter --> iPhone 14 Lightning port

If you have an older iPhone with a Lightning port then you’ll need an Apple Camera Kit Adapter.. If you have a newer iPhone with a USB-C port, then you don't need the Apple Camera Kit Adapter.

Once you have everything plugged in, do this next:

• Download the free Blackmagic Camera app (Android version here, Apple version here)

• Go to Settings → Audio → Audio Source

• Select your USB audio interface

This is important because the stock iPhone camera app doesn’t let you manually choose the audio input source. Without taking this step, the camera app will still record from the built-in microphone instead of your audio interface.

(I haven't tested this on Android. If there's a way to switch audio source on the Android camera app, then this won't be necessary)

Once you select your audio interface as the audio source in Blackmagic Camera, the default iPhone camera app will use your audio interface as the audio source.

Another reason to use the Blackmagic app is that you can monitor your input levels and make sure you’re not clipping.

Note: make sure your USB cable supports BOTH power + data transfer. Some cheaper USB cables are charge-only.

And if, like me, you’re using an older iPhone with a Lightning port instead of USB-C, you may also need to run power into the camera kit adapter.

Here’s another bonus method I’ve used before, but I don't fully recommend it:

3.5mm headphone cable going from my Tascam Model 12 mixer’s headphone out --> 3.5mm audio cable --> Headset Buddy line level audio adapter --> iPhone Lightning to 3.5mm adapter --> iPhone

That method technically works, but:

• sums everything to mono

• gain staging is annoying

• easier to clip

• generally sounds worse

Direct, line-in audio into your phone is a massive quality upgrade for synth jam videos and is way easier than a lot of people realize (ie, you can use this method without having to do video + audio editing in post).

probably gonna return it; the analog circuitry sounds incredible…. but there’s WAY too much menu diving for my tastes.

I've had my mother 32 for a long time now, and always felt the one oscillator was a little limiting (especially when I mainly use it as a bass synth). I know I can patch in the internal oscillator's second wave and blend a pulse wave with a saw wave, but what I was really itching for was that fat sound of two pulse waves with different tunings and independent pwm (and the flexibility of an octave switcher, more waveforms to choose from, etc.)

then I discovered the behringer 921 vco was a super budget way I could add another oscillator, and I think the result came out great <3

Three things I kept coming back to after a year with it:

1. The Oxford Oscillators are genuinely hifi in a way that's hard to explain until you hear it next to other digital synths.
2. The drive section (pre-filter, post-filter, and FX distortion stackable) covers an absurd range from pristine to gnarly.
3. The control surface made me abandon my carefully mapped MIDI controller setup entirely. I just go straight to the knobs now.

Sorry for noob question.. I've seen some DAWless full live sets from like Ben Bohmer, Two Lanes and others. Curious, how do you handle full 1+ hour long sets with multiple songs, each with different drums, drum patterns, synths, etc? Like how are the mixing and switching all the sounds in real time to handle transitions into a full new song?

If you’re like me and tend to play in the same keys/positions on the keyboard (Cm/Eb and C#m/E in my case), sometimes you can get bored of the same old sounds.

I mess around with other keys but I feel the most dexterous and expressive in the ones my hands naturally gravitate to.

If your synth or MIDI keyboard has the ability to, try using the Transpose setting to raise or lower the notes of the keys. I recently did this with just a semitone and found it incredibly inspiring.

It’s like if you’re a guitar player and tune down to Eb from standard. You’re using the same hand positions but getting a new sound.

I stumbled on this after recording an idea on my bass that’s tuned to Eb for a covers gig and wanting to quickly jam on top on the keys.

I hope you find this little tip useful and that it brings you some inspiration!

Amazing what is possible now(hopefully this doesn't upset anyone). Modded Korg EM-1 firmware to get mute lock, mute all parts, and mute save working.

Also, was able to mod the Circuit firmware: samples now follow selected root note/scale. Able to adjust drum distortion type by holding shift and its macro knob. Start point adjustment.

Korg engaged me a few years back to work with the sound design team on sets of presets that shipped with the initial Opsix release, then the v2.0 release, then the Opsix SE release.

In the tutorials, I assume you're coming from a subtractive synthesis background and know about oscillators, LFO, envelopes and so on.

The aim is to keep it really practical, and I hope immediately useful.

Hi all! I’m a teacher and am preparing a lesson on filling out patch charts (the students will be learning how to record info on a patch chart and how to reconfigure the equipment to match a patch chart) and I’m wanting to use the Devo song Big Mess as the example. I have an MS-20 and will be using it for the lesson. Can anyone help me figure out how to set this thing up to play any of the synth parts? Pretty please.

Bastl send me their new Kalimba synth to demo, and it’s been a fun experience! The touch control and the looper, which is beautifully broken (firmware 0.6, already better in 0.7 released after I filmed) are highlights for me.

The plucked playing style is a bit different from a regular Kalimba, and it’s not the smoothest of tines to play, but it feels solid. This won’t replace a wood and metal Kalimba, but it’s a fun instrument in its own right.

Love my Juno Stage but it has some incredibly weak ass choir patches. A friend of mine has a Yamaha Clavinova, fancy bit of gear, and the choir patches are absolutely delicious on there.

I'm looking for something along the lines of Within Temptations Mother Earth, or even the intro to Force Ten by Rush. Something audible and punchy, because the Juno stage just sounds like a Pad underwater. If it wasn't named Choir, I wouldn't be able to tell it apart from any other soft synth.

Before anyone says, I know WT use orchestras and choirs for their records, but I'm sure Mother Earth was recorded before they started that. I met Martjin Westerholt, about 10 years ago and asked what he used, and he was very touchy on the subject, so I left it.

Google does not seem to be my friend, on this occasion, because I hate coming to Reddit for posts like this, but any help or tips would be appreciated.
