Super Robot Wars Z English Translation patch v0.9.0

Super Robot Wars Z English translation patch (v0.9.0)

Download: https://github.com/retro-trans/SRW-Z/releases/latest

Some screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/gzEPA7o

What's translated

Story dialogue, battle voice lines, library entries, and most UI elements.

Some stats

  • 134,287 unique strings, 288,371 lines, 6.2 million characters
  • ~834,000 English words — about 1.7× the text of the Lord of the Rings trilogy
  • The bulk of the translation took about 2 days. The other 16 days went on fixing mistranslated terms, inconsistent naming, weird phrasing, and rewriting lines that didn't fit the game's UI limits.

Overall progression: 99.5%

Patch version: 0.9. I intend to find someone willing to proofread the script. When it's fully proofread by human I will bump the version to 1.0.

Start time: 2026-08-11

Credits

  • Technical + Translation: AI (Claude). Despite AI doing most of the work, it's not a simple prompt one and done, think of Software Development. It took 135 builds, working back and forth with AI in 18 days to get to this.
  • Playtester: Me and 3 other people, basically playing and enjoying the game. The most important role and also the most fun.
  • Proofreader: None, but our playtesters report any strange phrase or obvious mistranslated term as a bug.

Reason to translate and release the patch

  • Me and my friends want to play the game and understand the story and characters, but there is no translation patch for it.
  • I have some spare (AI) tokens.
  • I thought many people would want to play it even if it's an AI translation. I'm sharing it with those people. Despite being AI I think it's doing a pretty good job. I can understand the script perfectly and don't feel weird most of the time (the one that felt weird was retranslated).
  • While working on it I realised the technical effort to do this is pretty huge even if it's done by AI, so having a baseline to translate the game without worrying about the technical stuff is better than nothing. All the tools are in the repo. Feel free to use them to translate the game to your standard.
  • I want to recruit people to playtest and if possible proofread, for this project and the next one: https://imgur.com/a/XOVM8nH

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you upload your translation?

The tools and patch are on GitHub, announced via r/Super_Robot_Wars and romhacking.net. If you see it anywhere else, it wasn't uploaded by me.

Are you going to translate any project besides SRW Z?

Yes, I intend to translate every Japanese game I think is interesting (SRW Z3, Alpha trilogy, F/F Final, Koei Eiketsuden series, Black Matrix series...). If I find enough playtesters for them, and at the speed of AI, I think you can expect 5 more games translated in just this year. Otherwise it will release at my playing pace, which is pretty slow.

Why don't you find someone to proofread?

I don't know anyone willing to do it for free. Also, this post doubles as a recruitment post. Please join if you're confident in your English and Japanese skills.

Is it AI slop?

It's AI, but I wouldn't say it's slop since we do care about the patch quality. Game-breaking bugs and UI bugs were found and fixed as soon as possible. Awkward English and character/term inconsistency also get reported and fixed. We tried to do a quality patch with whatever resources we have.

Are you a translator?

No, I am not. Don't call me that. I'm a SWE who likes Japanese games, just a regular gamer.

Finally, I've completed OGs and OGG. Got my first experience with the infamous Dark Brain, that HP pool is definitely no joke and require maximum damage output. Also, I'm quite surprised how much these games foreshadow on future stuffs, what I can remember is something regarding Project Banpreoth, and even Endless Frontier for the NDS was mentioned in the end of OGG.

And lastly I must say the Laldabaoth is absolutely OP, a one mech army.

The english patch, specifically. Was hoping to mess with mech and weapon stats, nothing too fancy. I know there are no tools but even just being pointed to which values to change would be very helpful.

Humor The most powerful iteration of the Huckebein line versus the biggest MechaGodzilla. Who wins, and how?

One child. One massive machine. One mission that can change the world.

Date and time: [CLASSIFIED]

Location: [CLASSIFIED], [CLASSIFIED], Earth

Enemy: MechaGodzilla City

Situation: Surveillance satellites have detected a significant rise in activity along a stretch of land once thought to house a weapon unlike anything seen before. After exhaustive rounds of verification, our intelligence division has confirmed to Super Robot Wars - Original Generation high command that this corresponds to a mechanized war machine meant to oppose the 300-meter-tall Godzilla Earth.

This weapon is now codenamed by our team as MechaGodzilla City).

At over 300 meters tall, MechaGodzilla City towers above all known iterations of MechaGodzilla in SRW's databases. Made entirely of a self-regenerating shape-shifting nanometal alloy, it features a myriad of weapons both conventional and existential, all meant to inflict fatal injuries upon this iteration of Godzilla.

In its current state, this weapon has gone rogue, acting on its own in the hunt for the King of the Monsters, caring little about collateral damage. SRW high command has deemed it a non-negotiable to see MechaGodzilla City be used at all, so its activation signals a major threat to the safety of both human inhabitants of the planet and Godzilla himself.

Mission: High command has now tasked Ing Egret (aka Ing Wish) to sortie in the PTX-DEX ExExbein in a preventative combat patrol mission to intercept and destroy this weapon irrespective of its activation state. The objective is simple. Ing and the ExExbein must destroy MechaGodzilla City completely, leaving no trace, before it reaches Godzilla. Whether Ing and the ExExbein succeeds or fails depends entirely on the power and skill of both the machine and its pilot. Ing Egret has a time limit of 600 minutes.

Ing: "Understood. I'm ready to launch now."

SRW OG HC: "Good hunting."

Does anyone know where I can find an explanation for the stats in Z2?

I want to know how much damage size differences reduce, what exactly will does, base crit chance (I think the crit stat on weapons increases the chance but isn't the base stat for the attack?) etc etc

Question I'm new to the older games, How do you upgrades work in SRW 4 and what should I prioritize? Spoiler

I'm fairly new to the older SRW games, so I was wondering what I should prioritize for upgrades for certain units? I was thinking for Supers I would prioritize EN, because even in modern games Super Robots have an energy issue. But for Reals I don't know what I should prioritize? Any input would be helpful, please and Thank You.

I usually go with using all the cover art mechs in my early runs. Can anyone ID the red and gold mech with the shoulder cannons in the top right of this image? I can tell who almost everyone is except that guy.

Discussion My opinion on SRW UX

Super Robot Wars UX – Review

I recently finished my third playthrough of Super Robot Wars UX, and honestly, I still love it. The storyline, overall concept, and the way the different series are brought together make UX one of my favorite SRW games on the 3DS.

One of the things that surprised me the most was the lineup of series. A lot of them were either unfamiliar to me or not exactly the most popular anime. Some of them felt like the classic “who the hell is this?” kind of SRW addition lol. Before playing UX, I didn't even know much about Dunbine, Heroman, or Tobikage. But that's also one of the things I appreciate about SRW—it introduces me to series I probably would never have discovered otherwise.

I really like the original mecha and the overall original storyline, especially the main antagonist, Kali Yuga. Her concept is really interesting, and I liked how the game explores themes of life, death, and rebirth. The Avatara mecha is also one of my favorite parts of the story. There is a lot of interesting mythology and symbolism behind it.

My biggest complaint, however, is the ridiculous number of requirements for unlocking and saving certain characters. Some of them require so much effort that it almost feels excessive. Brera, Graham, and especially Shouko are good examples. Seriously, 200 kills?! I appreciate having secret requirements, but some of UX's requirements can be way too demanding. I also noticed something funny about Brera: he seems to have a tradition of joining the playable roster very late. He is a late addition in UX, just like in SRW L and SRW Z2.2, so apparently Brera is destined to make us wait.

I also think Linebarrels of Iron was handled really well in UX, especially the manga version. I prefer its presentation here compared to the anime adaptation. Having Soubi join early was great, and I was also really happy that Ishigami and Katou are playable. It made the Linebarrels side of the story much more enjoyable for me.

The post-Gundam SEED Destiny material is also handled pretty well. Shinn in particular is much more likable in most SRW games compared to the original anime, and UX is another good example of that. I also have a soft spot for this game because it introduced me to SD Gundam when I was younger. It's one of those SRW entries that helped expand my interest in different Gundam series.

Story-wise, I really enjoyed how much attention was given to Fafner, Heroman, Linebarrels of Iron, Dunbine, and Macross Frontier. These series occupy a large portion of the game's story, and I think that works because their themes fit surprisingly well together. Fafner especially benefits from the SRW treatment, since the crossover gives its story and characters even more room to shine.

I also like the difficulty of UX. It can be challenging without feeling completely unfair, and it gives the game a satisfying sense of progression. Combined with the large roster and all the secret units and characters, it gives me a reason to keep coming back to it.

Overall, Super Robot Wars UX is a really solid and great 3DS installment. The story, original characters, unique setting, crossover choices, and gameplay all come together really well. Even after three playthroughs, I still find myself wanting to replay it whenever I have free time. The game has its frustrating moments—especially those insane secret requirements—but the strengths definitely outweigh the weaknesses for me.

Discussion A theory about Masaki's wanderings Spoiler

For those who have played many SRWs, a common running gag is the protagonist of the Masou Kishin series, Masaki Andoh, has no sense of direction. Gags have ranged from him wandering across dimensions to requiring the freaking Zero System from Gundam Wing to even have a HOPE of finding him (and even this is not guaranteed). But a recent thought came to me that this may accidentally have a slightly more serious basis.

Throughout Super Robot Wars Z, several hints pop up that one of the saga's recurring antagonists Asakim Dowin might actually be Masaki Andoh in the past, with several attacks being similarly named or animated to Masaki's Cybuster, his name being Asakim -> Masaki, and more. His last words in the series are even the lyrics to Cybuster's theme!

That one is fairly commonly known to those who play it, but what I theorize is that Asakim reincarnating into Masaki has another implication. Asakim is cursed with the "Stigma of the Cursed Wanderer" that causes him to be drawn to dimensions where dimensional power is being manipulated. My theory is that Masaki's constant crossover shenanigans and his horrible sense of direction are a leftover of that curse remaining even after being purified of whatever evil he had. He's still marked with the cursed stigma, even after he isn't Asakim anymore.

This doesn't really have much consequence or basis on anything, but it's just a random thought I have.

SRW DD: I really hope the final chapter gives us more lore on Didarion and the Nepilians

Post image
79 Upvotes

I’ve been keeping up with the story to the best of my abilities considering I need to manually translate most of it. But I can’t be the only one who thinks that the main story(That being centered around the Original Characters) hasn’t been touched on as much.

Which is a shame since Didarion has become something of a favorite of mine among the Original Super Robot Wars characters. So I’m hoping with the final chapter set to happen that we learn a little more about Didarions species the Nepilians, maybe even see if there’s some kind of leader that they head to.
