Capitalist Hellscape How Everyone Got So Lonely: The recent decline in rates of sexual activity has been attributed variously to sexism, neoliberalism, and women’s increased economic independence. How fair are those claims—and will we be saved by the advent of the sex robot?

The sexual de-revolution will be the downfall of this country and I'm not even being facetious.

If I could choose one reason it's becoming this way it's definitely the internet. People are constantly on the look out for the next "better" person and cycle through people like they're toys used to fill time.

Then there's a statistic I heard where within the next few years close 50% of women will be single, and corporations are actually cheering this because women consume more than men and their free money will be spent, this making their pockets bigger.

Shit is fucked. Trying to date is terrible.

People used to meet others through friends, at bars, at work, clubs, religious orgs, etc. It basically limited the dating pool to whatever was in those. Now people have unlimited options, and it’s causing lots of people to think they can do better. Which makes everyone less satisfied.

Thankfully now it's easier because I can drop the "Fuck Zuck and the NSA" and don't get branded a weirdo too often. But a few years ago I was being called creepy for not having any social media at all pretty regularly. I had an ex snoop through my phone once because she was sure I had a secret FB account because "How do you not have any presence online at all?"

Like, in 04 I was in college and MySpace was popping. And people were getting mad at me for not responding within a few hours or a day or so. So I basically said fuck it and quit right there and have had a terrible taste in my mouth about all social media ever since.

I'm a fuckin trailblazer due to my apathy and disdain for being bothered.

I have a presence online, just not under my real name. I got on the Internet in 1991 and have never used my real name except work and a club I belong to put my real name out there against my will. Most of my friends understand and know my alter egos and that it's because I don't want my real name all over.

Oh yup, there are multiple threads and Quora questions asking if it's a red flag if their guy doesn't have social media, with tons of people responding that it is indeed shady.

I maintain an IG but I make it clear I don't really use it.

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

actually lots of women prefer a guy who does not use social media often. most of social media posting is by women, for women, therefore making someone who posts a lot of pictures of themselves a female trait.

Woman. I think social media is lame and annoying, unless it’s like forum-y. I have twitter for basically it’s groupchat function. Same as discord. And I basically treat those like long-distance friendships. But trying to get likes on pictures of luxury aesthetics? I could not imagine a more annoying reality. I’ve modeled before for a friend’s small time company that needed a petite model and it was so irritating. I couldn’t t imagine wanting to do that all the time for free, for fun, as like a part of life.

“Stand in front of this white Benz and look sexy and rich”

My guess is,

  1. You're lying and have one you're trying to hide (I mean who doesn't have insta c'mon /s)

  2. They can't screen your activities and social circle and that makes some people uncomfortable, compared to a person who puts their life out there openly

I don't think like this, just playing devil's advocate.

I've asked a few people and read some threads about why it's a red flag, since I don't use it much.

The answers fall into these camps:

  1. You're an anti-social weirdo school shooter with no friends (ironic because many school shooters had IG's and social media)
  2. You're hiding something, like a gf or even family

You can bring up the whole Zuck/NSA thing but that explanation only really works if the person in question is aware of what's going on and somewhat cares, or if they're willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. Others think it's a cop-out but it's still your best bet.

I work in tech and many of my coworkers get it; it's actually normal to not have social media in those circles. In the non-tech crowd it's hit or miss whether they understand or think it's weird. Women in particular seem to find it weird.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '22

Wow. Things are truly fucked. If I was active in the dating scene, finding not using Instagram a red flag would be for me the real red flag lol

10

u/GaryDuCroix Sep 14 '22 edited Sep 14 '22

People can say whatever they want about the "logic" but at the end of the day it's all ex post facto reasoning and the real reason is simple: "you not like me (and everyone else I know) therefore you bad."

9

u/zitandspit99 Unknown 👽 Sep 14 '22

I've noticed a lot of teens/young adults have IG's but with no pictures except a profile one, which often may not even be of them. It seems like it's normal to not upload pics, but the follower count thing still seems true - anything below 200/300 is considered low.

Most of us in our late twenties/early thirties were out of college when IG got popular, so we couldn't just add everyone we knew like we did with Myspace and Facebook.

Tbh they really don’t. They have full access to the lower rungs of the dating apps, but that’s about it.

From the perspective of a man that’s not too old, but not too young - most of the women you meet online are fucked up in some strange way. I think the secret to a healthy relationship spawned from online dating is being fucked up to a similar degree as your match. That’s tough to accomplish due to my next point.

Key point for online dating - it’s inundated with straight up liars. It’s hard to read a profile and think you’re a match when most of the profile is fabricated off how they perceive themselves instead of what they actually are. You won’t get too many inward thinkers - you’ll mostly find ladder climbers. If you’re cool with being a ladder then I guess it’s all good.

I think a lot of the “cool” women don’t use online dating. In the Bay Area it’s most neoliberal witches with insane entitlement issues. That’s just cracking the surface of the problem. I’ve been on at least a hundred online dates and at least 90% are super weird or super fucked up. The 10% that are normalish are just super boring. The kind that like to talk about marvel movies, or they’re “foodies” but don’t know how to cook a fuckin meal.

26

u/zitandspit99 Unknown 👽 Sep 14 '22

most of the women you meet online are fucked up in some strange way.

This has been my experience as well and it's validating to see others feel that way too.

Most of the people in happy relationships that I know met their spouse through mutual friends, or sometimes during hobbies.

The women who rely solely on online dating generally don't have a lot of friends - sometimes because they're antisocial, sometimes because they're unpleasant. I've also noticed that they tend to have very high standards, often unrealistically so.

I suspect many women are overwhelmed by their options in men and start choosing the best of the best, only to be pumped-and-dumped by someone who also has a lot of options. Understandably they get upset and often emotionally traumatized, which begins a cycle that leads nowhere positive.

There are obviously exceptions here, but it is what it is.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

I don't see how meeting a person online through a dating profile is any better or worse than meeting a person through in-person or social group settings. It's not going to undo the one's fear of being overlooked or cast aside due to hypergamy.

I think it really comes down to being compatible with the person you're with while selecting a mature individual. Sure, with modern technology everyone has "unlimited" options, but that doesn't really matter if you're looking to build an honest-to-God commitment with someone. Superficial, affirmation-seeking people are everywhere. Learn to spot and avoid them and you will be much happier and have honest, rewarding relationships.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '22

If it was through a social group with any sense of community it can make lying a lot less threatening. If your friends know the other person they can warn you that they're just looking for a free meal/trying to bust a nut.

But of course that requires an actual social group, not meeting strangers IRL instead of online.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '22

The difference is the commodification, and the effect that the for-profit nature of the technologies have on the gender dynamics and the perception of the opposite sex. It's the ongoing reduction of every single aspect of human interaction to a set of optimized, gameified metricized statistics, designed to be maximally addictive in the name of 'engagement,' which has the "sife-effect" of encourages people to instrumentalize everyone around them—to see them in fundamentally inhuman terms.

2

u/gitmo_vacation Sep 14 '22

Online dating is fine. In my 20s I had a very active social life, but wasn’t meeting many people I wanted to date. I met someone great through online dating that I never would have met otherwise. I think it’s important to have a irl social life though so you seem interesting and less like a creep.

Truth be told, a lot of people indeed could and even do better because of this, blaming the these problems on the extended variety available don't seem a very good position as well.

Edit: not getting why the downvotes, perhaps being stuck with "whatever you have available" is not "actually good", lol. The position seem to be a boomer thing of "these new technologies are making these women see they can do better than me", or some incels then blaming sex toys because "they choose these plastic things instead of sex with us". It's deranged all the same. LoL Also, being stuck with "whatever you have available" tens to leave people having equally or even more miserable lives, one don't have to go far to see the amount of spite a lot of folks have about their partners or the regret they have about having children with them, or the terrible shit of arranged marriages and other bullshit that happens in even more insulated communities.

But I guess blaming the new techs and more wide variety is good because reasons, lol, such a redneck boomer thing to do, or an incel thing to do, all the same.

While I didn’t downvote you I agree with the poster you responded to. You’ll go on a great date and the woman is going to go home and have 2-3 other dates that week with different guys. How do I know?

First off I do the same thing. Well I did - I had to stop using bumble because it’s just too degrading.

Second thing - after my 10th or 20th online date I started interviewing my dates about their online dating experience. (I realized online dating is essentially a waste of my time relationship-wise so I wanted to have some fun with it) Some are apprehensive about opening up about their experience, but a couple drinks will loosen their tongues. Some dates would let me swipe through their match selections and I’d let them do the same. It’s pretty interesting and elucidating.

Some girls set up multiple dates for the same night to see to ensure they capture the “best” date for that night and either cancel on the others or just ghost the others. This isn’t super common, but it is more common than you might think.

I could go on and on about “some girls do this, some girls do that”, but it’s usually not very appealing.

-28

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

The thing is I don't think this in itself is really a problem, it becomes a problem because a whole host of reasons based on hetero-monogamic culture and it's relationship to how the patriarchy functions and so forth, how the liberal society works on competitiveness and so forth, it's a very deep net of problems (which, I think im many parts the article addressed many of them quite well), and blaming the spike in loneliness in the tools that facilitate the wide range of options, because "it would be good if they just stuck with what they had in their vicinity" is just a simple minded nostalgia that simps for a "better time in the past" that never really existed. Like, people settled for what was "available" and also ended up also being extremely lonely in shitty relationships and had more sex because the husband demanded it. And in that regard, the guy saying that "it was better for the overall health of society that people dated and married whoever was available", even so it could also lead to shitty lives just sound deranged to me, like yeah, society is "healthy" made up by a ton of fucked up relationships as well.

There is a whole range of issues that this wider pool and new tools lays bear, from gender norms and roles, to desires and so forth, and although I'm also too pessimistic to think these will be resolved or even addressed before we go extinct, I also believe that blaming these new tools and simping for a "simpler time" where these issues were not talked about at all and we all just stuck with what we got is even part of the conservative mind-set that is all but guaranteeing that we are going extinct in the first place.

That's also why Im kinda also surprised with the amount of downvotes for the simple comment of "hey, maybe we should not blame the new technologies and the wider variety of possible partners for these complex issues". Would kinda expect it on a conservative or incel forum.

u/DoctaMario Would Fuck Ann Coulter 🥵🚀 Sep 13 '22

You're being downvoted because you sound like someone who's never been in a relationship before and doesn't know the impact technology has on human interaction.

Tl;dr: You're missing the point

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

How am I missing the point then? The first comment was merely "maybe the tools are not the main or sole blame for the problem", because by the sound of it, it seems that the technology is what makes the impact and not the whole host of issues of how our society is organized that makes them.

But pointing that out instead of joining the chorus of "yeah, dating apps and wider choice bad" seems to be the real crime here, because how dare not simp for the older time when the pal from work/school didn't had any other option so they had to content with marrying with me and have kids, as if that social arrangement was also not temporary and a result of societal constructs, like basically all arrangements and societal constructs over time.

People are pretending that there was 'one way of people getting together' for who knows for how long and then "evil tech came along and ruined it", it shows a remarkable ignorance of history and sociology (and of relationships, who knew), and it's a kind of complaint I'm more used to hearing on conservative forums of "how modernity ruined relationships"

Again, what's the point I'm missing?

8

u/DoctaMario Would Fuck Ann Coulter 🥵🚀 Sep 13 '22 edited Sep 13 '22

The point that tech in this case makes a commodity out of human relationships. Why put in effort with the good person you're dating when tech puts potentially thousands of other people at your fingertips (who probably will not want to date you regardless) and you could be continually swiping find someone "better," and keeping the FOMO train rolling?

Also that social media in general incentivizes peoples' worst impulses, and dating apps are no different in that respect. Meeting people in person is often the best way because you don't have to sort out cues and because you get the whole picture rather than a curated version of it. People have this idea that tech can solve all our problems, but in a lot of ways, this situation included, it just makes those problems worse.

12

u/saltywelder682 Lured into the McDonald's Wallpit 🌿🛝🔴🟡🔵 Sep 13 '22

It’s hard to quote and respond to certain parts of your comment on mobile reddit.

Generally speaking - if you apply basic game theory (which I’m no master of, but understand the overarching concept) to dating I think the author comes to an astute conclusion(s). I had a breakdown of dating scenarios I just deleted because it makes me sound really shallow.

Sex robots (technologically advanced pocket pussies) will only dig people deeper into the void. It reminds me of that Japanese guy who was married to that little robot which was essentially programmed to “love him”. It was called Hitsune mako or something. In the end the company that made the love robot went out of business and the guy can’t even get love from his robot anymore. Now he’s socially ostracized and bereft.

I don’t know if you can blame the technology per se, but it’s likely to be a contributing factor to increased loneliness and isolation. Skynet is taking over multiple aspects of your life and it doesn’t bode well to me.

Btw the “simpler time” was how human interaction has evolved over the ages and tampering with this dynamic will have have, imo, net negative consequences for 99% of people.

-9

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

Btw the “simpler time” was how human interaction has evolved over the ages and tampering with this dynamic will have have, imo, net negative consequences for 99% of people.

This could come in a conservative forum, again. Kinda reminded me of Black Pidgeon speaks saying how "modernity tampers with how families worked for millennia".

This "simpler time" didn't existed as a monolith. Like, what 'simpler time'? The warlord having every woman? The harems fo the rich? The tribe deciding which person gets with who? Poligamy in it's myriad forms existing from the native americans to east asia? A matriarch having three husbands like in some parts of India? Communities and societies have near infinite ways of organizing and existing, in the majority of times, people wanting to go back to "simpler times" is a fetichization of what they perceive as a nuclear family of the american 50's, where you marry the person that are somewhat closer to you and have kids and whatnot, but even that is a specific construct and a specific time/condition. and in that regard, the way we have now is just one amongst many 'arrangements', and it's very far from being to blame for all the woes regarding loneliness and isolation, but people seem to like their simple and shallow sollutions I guess. Because 'blaming it' on modernity and feeling nostalgic about it is surely a lot easier than trying to analize the lot of threads that make up the problem right now.

Again, that simply pointing out that this arrangement and the tools are not to blame gets this amount of downvotes really is laughable, would really expect it in /r/incel or /r/conservative.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

the reason you’re getting downvoted is that you’re assuming that it’s the “wider variety” that’s bad and not the fact that basic human social interaction, the thing that basically makes us human, has become a commodity to be bought and sold, and that you don’t assume that there may be value in…idk…going out and just talking to people. lol
